Music Review: One of the most beautiful, sad CDs I own

Instead, find the perfect pop song in 'Guest List' (*****), a hugely moving work with great bass, a wonderful harmonica solo and the chorus 'Everyone needs to be somebody/everyone needs to find someone who cares' with E's voice almost breaking under the sadness in the most beautiful way. Susan's House (****) is a classic dark pop song, all lilting piano and monologue sections masking dark-as-anything lyrics, and 'Beautiful Freak' (****), 'Spunky' (****) and 'Flower' (****) are lovely ballads of love and beauty.

The rockier side of the CD is rounded off by the single 'Rags to Rags' (****), 'My Beloved Monster' (****), the stunningly sad 'Not Ready Yet' (*****), which features some truly excellent guitar playing (if you like this track, please check out 'Without You I'm Nothing' by Placebo) and especially the only really grungey track, 'Mental' (*****), an electro-rock masterpiece with big, grungy guitars and a mad, screaming synth solo.

Finally the CD is rounded off with two more excellent tracks, 'Lucky Day In Hell' (*****), a darkly angry song with a deceptively quiet chorus and the lovely, stripped-down, sad yet uplfiting 'Manchild' (****). Here ends a classic, wonderful CD. Beautiful. 5 stars.
