Music Review: Another delightful release in the Grieg piano music series

The complete piano music of Edvard Grieg is one of those extremely commendable projects undertaken by Naxos (and it is almost a surprise to realize how much there is of it), and it was an excellent choice to give it to the Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg whose playing throughout the series is consistently fine (if not quite in the league of, say, Andsnes or Gilels in those surprisingly few works where competing alternatives are readily available). Most of the works are colorful miniatures, but Grieg's impressive ability to create harmonic color and inventive melodies rarely flags.
Volume 3 contains some of his most famous piano music (apart from the Lyric Pieces), including his only mature large-scale work, the masterful Ballade op. 24 - emotionally powerful variations on a Norwegian folksong. The Folkelivsbilleder is a truly delightful and atmospheric set including the famous "Norwegian Bridal Procession", but the rest of the music here is almost without exception of very high quality as well - even the early Poetic Tone Pictures are surprisingly good, although they do not, perhaps, display the full mastery of harmonic and melodic color and range of the mature Grieg. The Album Leaves constitute another example of the wealth of gems hidden away in this series. The two shorter pieces are of less interest, however.
As on the previous two volumes, Steen-Nøkleberg plays everything with a strong sense of poetry and color. The slight drawback is, however, still the slight overuse of rubato and lack of a sharp rhythmic focus. The Ballade in particular could have benefited from a little more restraint in this respect. Still, with good sound, this is overall a truly recommendable release.
