Music Review: beautifully modulated Grieg

I grew up with Thomas Beecham's wonderful Grieg recordings, but his Peer Gynt suites are no longer available separately from the complete incidental music, which includes the choral parts of which I'm not especially fond. If like me you only want the suites, this recording by the Bergen Philharmonic is an excellent way to go. Ole Kristian Ruud and the Bergen players bring a special feel to Peer Gynt without indulging in excess pomp or sentimentality. I like the restraint that Ruud shows by letting this music speak for itself.

The balance of the disc is filled with substantial pieces of music: the short "Funeral March" for the composer Rikard Nordraak, an atmospheric "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations," and a gorgeous transcription of one of the Lyric Pieces, "Bell Ringing," that will have you pushing the replay button.

The sound is terrific too. Highly recommended.
