Music Review: Hirsti Is Proof Modern Singing Can Be Done Right

I just got a great CD on Aurora of Grieg songs with Hirsti and Jansen. This set must contain the same material. Marianne Hirsti has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Also, her style of singing definitely shows a modern edge in a good way, but avoids all the archetypally bad things I don't like about modern singers, summed up so well by Renee Fleming, Dawn Upshaw and Emma Kirkby. I really don't like even talking this way, because I have heard vocal fanatics go on about singers and it inspires caution in one's own judgments and desire not to go on in wacky picayunness, if that is a word, or maybe puctitliousness, which definitely is a word, and even a lifestyle for some. But when you hear a voice like Marianne Hirsti's, which is at once so appropriately modern and fresh in style, and yet so pefectly poised with vocal technique, which was common with all the old singers I love, you realize it is not just about freakishly being picky. NO sliding up-down to notes. No faux-fadings in and out around the pitch, etc. It ia a matter of good solid taste, which seems to be in short supply these days. Even amongst the remaining acolytes of great music!
