Music Review: From the beginning of the digital recording era: a classic!

Confession time: I'm a Viennese waltz freak (sob!) and this is as good as it gets. Lots of works I had not heard before (and I have all of this series for the last twenty years or so. Another favorite is New Year's Day Concert In Vienna 1987 conducted by Herbert Von Karajan with Kathleen Battle as soloist in one in which she takes your breath away). This is gem?tlichkeit (did I spell that right?) of a sort that Austrians excel at.
Amazon does all the heavy lifting for us terrified, amateur reviewers by giving names and sample soundtracks for each song. No point in retracing that territory. But to say that this is good, old time Vienna fun (listen to Harvard radio, WHRB 95.3 FM on iTunes radio on New Year's Eve for the perennial Old Vienna comedy recording) is like saying Paris is a nice town.
You get the applause from a happy audience, the percussive effects in some tunes, polkas as well as waltzes, great cover photos of the interior of the Grosse Musikvereinsaal concert venue, well written liner notes in four languages, and the satisfaction of knowing that this groundbreaking digital recording of a generation ago is a technological wonder and a masterpiece of a performance by the best musicians of an era now retreating to rest homes and spas.
Willi Boskovsky was the conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra, an orchestra which is run by the musicians who hire their choice of conductors and players. Anyone associated with them has to be good. They form one of the finest orchestras in the world. But in this concert, they just have fun - you will, too.
