With respect to the influence of Flaubert's novella Hérodias on his French play Salomé, Oscar Wilde said "Dans la littérature il faut tuer son père [In literature you must always kill your father]."
And while even the sound of such a thing would have been sinful anathema to the meek Bruckner, nevertheless the parallel obtains for his artistic relationship to Beethoven: for the Master's Symphonies, Violin Concerto, and Missa Solemnis are the direct launching point for Bruckner's Masses and Symphonies.
Moreover, as Wilde's Decadent esthetic shews evolutionary development from Flaubert's Realism, so Bruckner's ethos exhibits an efflorescent growth from the buds of Beethoven's fresh Romanticism unto a ripely decaying late-Romantic style.
Withal, within the realm of the orchestral, taste dictates a preference for Bruckner's advanced symphonies over Beethoven's--(with the exception of the latter's 6th and 9th).
Likewise, in the realm of choral music, a preference is again expressed for Bruckner's f-minor Mass over Beethoven's D-major Missa.
And so for Bruckner's choral music this 4CD collection is desirable above all others, featuring the three Masses, the Te Deum, the Psalm CL, and the small liturgical works.
Some of these have been re-released in various permutations, but this set remains exceptionally nice.
