Music Review: As if their was any doubt...really!

After first hearing Edguy's Mandrake album back in 2001, I was absolutely hooked. Then I started to purchase their earlier albums: Theater of Salvation, The Savage Poetry, and Vain Glory Opera, etc.... Then 2003 came around and I bought Burning Down the Opera, and while that was good live CD, I was really too hungry for new material to really appreciate it on a non-biased level.

Now we finally go some new Edguy material (yay!) Here is my ranting and ravings:

King of Fools (Single Version):
Really it is obvious why this was chosen as the title tack of the EP. While it isn't the most lyrically impressive of Tobias' endeavors, the chorus is totally infectious. I find myself singing it all the freakin' time, and making a complete ass out of myself in public! Supposedly the album version is different not only in length but lyrically as well. It's still Edguy, yet different.

New Age Messiah:
I'm not really a big fan of this track, but not for the same reason as some other people. Personally, the song just didn't catch my ear like King of Fools and Holy Water did. It's not a bad track, it's just not great. The complaints about the F-bombs and supposedly offensive slam towards Jesus is being so overblown by people, it isn't funny (speaking of overblown things, the Stratovarius "crisis" comes to mind!) If you are offended by it, don't listen to it, simple as that!

The Savage Union:
This song suffers the same fate as New Age Messiah in my case. It's not a bad song; it just failed to really catch my ear.

Holy Water:
This song is so different than anything that Edguy has done before, but they pull it off beautifully! It has such a strong atmospheric feel, it is so morose and creepy, probably due to the additional choir. Personally I felt this song would have been strong enough for the album, but hey, it fits just perfectly here. It is easily one of the most mature songs that Edguy has done to date.

Life and Times of a Bonus Track:
I'm sorry, but I find this track really hilarious. Seriously though, the song does have a valid point and opinion from Tobias and if you don't feel that way, maybe you're being just a little too uptight. Come on people!

In closing, I'm quite pleased this single. I mean, what other band goes to the trouble of releasing a single with 3-4 non-album tracks on it for five dollars! I think Tobias and crew were really generous on the material presented here, and as for Hellfire Club, I'm sure it will take a more serious tone (not that I'm worried about that).
