Music Review: Ed Cherry ... with a melancholic touch....

I first heard Ed Cherrys wonderful playing on the tribute CD to Grant Green conducted by Gregg Green. On that record Cherry played one song..Goodens Corner his was backed backed Larry Goldings and Idris Muhammad. Since then I have tried to get hold of some records by Ed Cherry and finally here was one.
Let me first say Ed Cherry is a wonderful jazzguitarplayer influenced by Grant Green and Wes Montgomery as well as Jimi Hendrix, From 1978-1992 he played in Dizzy Gillespies band.. and it is no wonder that Gillespie liked him...I am impressed about several things here... Cherry seem to be a "non flashy" player and seems to be more interested in the overall contexr and mode BUT he can sure groove... the influence of Green is never far away.. which also means that "the blues" is there all the time.. it also gives a kind of melancholic mode. This is kind of modern soul jazz... Dr Lonnie sometimes sounds a bit like Larry Goldings on his B3 The sax player Joe Ford is a nice surprise he plays sweet and bluesy.There are two vocal numnber where Laird Jackson does a very nice job..a slight touch of Cassandra Wilson ..but still very personal.
Favourite tracks are.. "Spirits Speak" and "Lennox Ave"
If you are looking for music played from deep within, and no "show off" then this is the right music for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
