Music Review: STR8 OFF THE STREETS OF MUTHAPHUCKIN COMPTON Review!

Taking off where the "It's On (Dr. Dre 187 Killa)" EP left off, E still has some venom left to spit at the Death Row Records crew here. On "Wut Would You Do", Eazy not only takes it to Dre but also his younger cohorts like Snoop, Kurupt, Daz, and even Death Row's head honcho Suge Knight. The song is entertaining but it's really more of a retread of the material from "It's On". The album's laid-back production on tracks like "Just Tah Let U Know" and "Sippin' On A 40" are the real treat. The latter featuring the story-telling skills of Dre'sta and B.G. Knocc-Out, an underrated rap duo who came up under E's wings, is one of the better drunken athems to drop in the mid-90's. "My Baby's Mama" has Eazy going after the mother of his child, long before Marshall Mathers ever dreamed of penning such daddy's revenge tales. "Tha Muthaphukkin Real" pairs Eazy with fellow N.W.A. alumni, M.C. Ren, for a trip down memory lane but without Dre and Cube, it feels a little bit light.

"Str8 Off The Streets" was clearly a work in progress when Eazy passed on. Despite what the die-hard Eazy fans will tell you, it's nowhere near the masterpiece that Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" is. Though it certainly could have been had Eazy been given the time to finish what would have been his first true solo album. As said before, Eazy will never win awards for his rhythm or flow but his charismatic rhymes more than make up for that. The ultimate tragedy is not just the fact that he left us way before he was able to realize his full potential but that his musical legacy has been overlooked so often. The fact that people don't throw his name in there with that of deceased greats like Pac and Biggie is almost blasphamous. After all, half of the rappers from the West Coast would never have even surfaced had it not been for Eazy-E and Ruthless Records. Love him or hate him, that is a fact.
