Music Review: Earth Crisis at their best (with a sense of humor)

Earth Crisis was always insufferably humorless. Their puritanical intolerance was a welcome antidote to the spineless value relativism of the 1990s, but they took themselves WAY too seriously, and as a result, it is hard to continue to appreciate their original material as an adult.
Slither, their only "grown-up" record, lacked the confidence necessary for growth through experimentation, and you could tell the band was about to fall apart when the promo photo showed Karl wearing a faux-leather jacket. A shame, but at least they knew when to stop.
The lack of any original material (or, much, anyway) is what makes this album so fantastic. A bit of critical distance from the songs allowed them to take risks and be playful. Holiday in Cambodia, as performed here by EC, is my favorite hardcore track of all time and showcases these guys as musicians at the height of their talents.
I am persistently irritated by the fact that the songs here are indexed out of order, both on the jacket and the cd data track, but its not enough of a flaw to pass on this album.
