Music Reviews of Eagles : The Very Best Of (2CD)

Music Review: Straight Talk from Glenn and Don
Rating: 5 Stars

I vacillated between 4 and 5 stars for one reason; over the years the Eagles had developed a professional coldness that I found off-putting. Well, the liner notes that come with this CD pushed it over the top. The CD comes with generous 48 page book that has a track by track commentary with Glenn Frey and Don Henley. Their honest comments to Cameron Crowe re-humanized two songwriters who will never get the complete respect they deserve because they were so successful. Content wise, they have always hit the mark. Their albums were always deep with good cuts and they were smart enough to pull good songs from other writers (Tom Waits, J. D. Souther, Gene Clark). They were fans who knew what they wanted to hear and found a way to put it together. Special thanks goes to Glenn for his respectful remarks about Poco; the forgotten link between Buffalo Springfield and the Eagles (and most of what you hear on Country Radio today). Yes, I know the Dillards and the Burritos are name checked more often, but, for a million different reasons Poco is forgotten. Buy this great compilation and then, if you want to hear what the Eagles might have sounded like if they hadn't become so damn successful, go buy the new Poco CD Running Horse.
(Glenn and Don, get Richard Thompson's CD Action Packed and listen to Persuasion. It may not be a hit single, but it could serve The Lone Arranger and Golden Throat well).

Music Review: JUST BOUGHT IT
Rating: 5 Stars

I just bought this I got it at Wal-mart.It seems like every old school classic rock artist has a 2 cd set out!I had audio cassettes
of GREATEST HITS and GREATEST HITS VOL.2 I haven't even opened it out of the shrink wrap yet.I wanted to read comments first here before I put it on.It looks like they got all the hits on here even the christmas single. The Eagles are a singles type band.I never cared for there studio albums.Somebody wrote here that The Eagles are american's best rock 'n roll band.I beg to differ.Creedance Clearwater Revival or The Byrds were. But The Eagles did make some great singles like Elton John did back in the more carefree '70's.I remember these tunes from my highschool days
cruising in the car and checking out the girls. This cd even has a brand new tune 'Hole in The World'.I wonder if this cd will outsell the first gratest hits lp;that originaly come out on vinyl back in '76 I believe.I liked the Eagles as a teenbopper but I was a big Stones freak.Remember 'HOT ROCKS' with Charlie Watts on the front cover with his arms folded looking stern. How about 'STICKY FINGERS' with the pants with the real zipper that zipped?Ahh, the vinyl days of yesteryear.I use to laugh with delight at my uncle for being a squire listening to big-band '78s I guess I'M A OLD FOGGIE myself not digging the new sounds of hip-hop and such.Anyway.,I'll put this cd on and remember my youth...

Music Review: The hits, maybe a miss or two...
Rating: 4 Stars

I've owned the inferior Import collection for several years now, and I was glad to have it replaced by this two-disc mammoth. This is the definition of a career-defining anthology, and the quality--despite whatever comments detractors may make to the contrary--is superb.
Granted, they left off one of my favorite tunes, the tongue-in-cheek guilty pleasure "Disco Strangler," and it would've been nice to see "Funky New Year," but these pique absences are more than made up for by the inclusion of "Those Shoes," "Ol' 55," and "Please Come Home for Christmas."
This collection is jam-packed with everything the casual listener needs, though, and as a proud owner of the boxed set (I received a promo copy of this two-disc set) I must say it is superior to that set, if only because you don't have to bother with "Long Run Leftovers" or the introduction to "One of These Nights."
This set has something longtime fans and new listeners eager to dig into the Eagles carefully will appreciate. This plays like it should, a clear, concise retrospective of the careers of Felder, Walsh, Henley, Schmidt, and Frey and the mark they have left on the music industry.
Except "Hole in the World." That's going to take a few more listenings before I can truly appreciate it. After all, it's no "James Dean."

Music Review: Eagles long awaited double greatest hits CD-"New" CD next?
Rating: 5 Stars

After watching the great NBC concert special last night (check out the new DVD coming out June 14)it shows that the Eagles have aged well. About the only complaint is the lack of a new album (which has been "in the works" for years now). This remastered double greatest hits CD was long overdue. This is for all fans, even those who have either of their box sets or still have their old Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2 (which have awful sound quality on CD next to this new compilation). It has been stated before, but the sound quality here is great. The Eagles (except for The Beatles)were the last major rock group to see their back catalog remastered and the sound improvement shows here. The song selection is dead on for about 90% of the set. It is nice to see songs like "In The City", and "James Dean" finally on an official greatest hits set. However a mediocre song like "Midnight Flyer" does not belong. If they were looking for another Randy Meisner song, they should have included the 70's concert favorite "Saturday Night" which they did in concert even after Timothy Schmitt replaced Meisner. One thing this set shows, the Bernie Leadon (remember him?)and Randy Meisner songs (except "Take It To The Limit") have not aged well at all and the Glenn Frey/Don Henley songs have aged well and are the classics which made the Eagles the biggest American Rock/Pop group of all time! Enjoy!

Music Review: Awesome!
Rating: 4 Stars

Of all the Greatest Hits CDs I have (and that's a lot), this one is by far the best ever for any group. Every hit, plus a B side or two, a Christmas single and of course their new single, Hole In The World, is on this double CD set. I put this in the car CD player yesterday as I went to the beach and how good it was to hear all those Eagles gems once again. They still sound as fresh today as they did way back when. Hole In The World is another Eagles gem, although a very sad song, it is sure to be one of their big hits. This compilation includes a 49 page booklet with a commentary by Don Henley and Glenn Frey about each song and how it came about. After that it lists each song and what album it's from with both album/single release dates, and the chart peak on both Pop and Adult Contemporary charts. It also includes a discography made up of album pictures. The booklet is very informative and actually a pleasure to read. I was surprised to read about what Hotel California is really about. I like the stab at Steely Dan too. This album is awesome, superb, out of this world. If you buy this and compare it to other Greatest Hits CDs you have, you will agree that this Eagles Greatest Hits CD is by far the best ever. After hearing this and reading the comments, I wonder if this is it for the Eagles. I certainly hope not. They are one great group!
