Music reviews of Tomorrow's Sounds Today

Music Review: Hail Dwight!
Rating: 5 Stars

Like most people, I go through musical phases; I listen to certain genres or artists for awhile then move on to another genre or artist. My musical interests scan the spectrum, from classical to the Clash and most styles in between, though I gravitate mostly to Roots/Country. The masters of the genre, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Joe Ely, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Dwight, to name a few are some of the most legitimate and influential songwriters of our time.

I discovered Dwight back in the nineties, and although I detest the commercial fodder of mainstream Nashville country music and the stamped-out pretty boys and girls with their cowboy hats and limpid pop songs, I took to his music right away. There is so much more to Dwight's artistry than what passes for "Country" today; to paraphrase Willie Nelson, real country music is "three chords and the truth." Dwight embodies that sentiment to a tee. His songs have the ability to crawl into your psyche and live there forever like the songs of the great ghosts of the past, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, and Dwight's inspiration, Buck Owens.

Regardless of its enigmatic title (can anyone explain it?), I agree with many of the previous writers' assessment that Tomorrow's Sounds Today is Dwight's best effort. The opener, "Love Caught Up To Me," tears out of the gate with a driving rhythm and a killer hook that augurs many more to come; Dwight's alter-ego Pete Anderson and company have never sounded better or more energetic; I can't think of another band in America, save for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, more in sync with each other and always ready to rock out, or turn it down behind Dwight's beautiful ballads. In "Free to Go" Pete Anderson and the band deftly channel both the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker Bands; my only wish is that they would have extended this track's rousing coda to make it the epic piece it could have been. Dwight performs three duets with Buck Owens, two of which are bonus tracks. On "The Sad Side of Town," they share songwriting credit; this ballad, a beautifully timeless track, recalls the glory days of unapologetic cry-in-your-beer story-telling pioneered by Buck Owens and it reminds us how much of a loss Buck's death is to the music world.

The record closes with Dwight's rendition of Rick Nielson's "I Want You to Want Me," a fun romp that somehow doesn't belong here - in addition to his previous version of Queen's " Crazy Little Thing Called Love" I wonder why he just doesn't produce an album of familiar rock interpretations. Anyhow, buy this record. You won't be disappointed.

Dwight Yoakam - Tomorrow's Sounds Today

Though Dwight Yoakam is tagged with a well-deserved (and in his case complimentary) "outsider" label, he is, ironically, one of country music's most accessible artists. Tomorrow's Sounds Today, his follow-up to the wonderful, acoustic-only Dwightyoakamacoustic.net, is proof. While it may be difficult to think of Yoakam as accessible--his music and persona are brash, cocky throwbacks to the days when slightly dangerous country artists actually did fall off their barstools--he has become so adept at incorporating a broad palate of influences that music fans of many stripes feel comfortable with the Kentucky cowboy. On Tomorrow's Sounds Today, Yoakam again reaches to hard-driving, old-school, honky-tonk country as the main ingredient while leavening the mix with jolting shots of rockabilly, Tex-Mex shuffle, and ain't-love-heartbreakin' sentiment. Yoakam's primary influence, Buck Owens, guests on three tracks, "The Sad Side of Town", "I Was There" (featuring Pete Anderson's growling guitar work), and "Alright, I'm Wrong," which showcases the accordion of Flaco Jimenez. Elsewhere, Yoakam delivers rocking country backbeats, memorable hooks, dusty down-home waltzes in full drawl, even a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me." As usual, Yoakam's impeccable band is up to the task, handling the songs with ease while not sacrificing a single volt of electricity. --S. Duda
