Music reviews of Return Of The Son Of...Music Review: Dweezil is on FIRE!!! Rating: 5 Stars
Initially, I was a little cold on Zappa Plays Zappa (mostly due to continuing frustration that my favorite musician/guitarist/composer/satirist was gone WAY TOO SOON).
As a result, when I bought the ZPZ box set, it took awhile to grow on me. At first, it seemed a bit too repertory-like for me...somewhat cold, maybe a bit too clinical. I watched the DVDs, which I really liked. Only a few weeks later did I start really listening to the CDs. Then, the performances really started to settle in and I noticed some of Dweezil's solos.
Well, I just picked up the "Return of the Son of..." I'm up to song 6 on the first disc and felt compelled to write a review. First, off: Dweezil is killing on this. Unbelievable solos: the closest thing any of us will ever hear to that indescribable FZ guitar thing in the flesh, but also different.
Also, there are new vocalists on this, which seem to bring up that bottom end in the vocals that may have been missing before. Plus, Ray White is on 5 of these songs...he really is the only guest on this, which I think is a great idea. No Vai, no Bozzio, no Napoleon Murphy Brock. As much as I think those guys are great (of course!!), this CD shines the light in 2 areas: (1) the performances of this great music and (2) Dweezil's solos.
The song selection is fantastic too! Andy, Inca Roads, Bamboozled by Love, Dirty Love, Zomby Woof, Montana...some of my favorites. Also, extended versions of The Torture Never Stops and King Kong! And, what I believe was the highest point of 200 Motels: Magic Fingers.
King Kong is broken down the way FZ did, but in a fresh new way.
Do yourself a favor: Get This!

The album includes over two hours of music with performances recorded over the past 2 years (Chicago, NYC, UK). The album features the wit and social commentary of Frank Zappa, as interpreted by his son Dweezil. Musical talent is in the Zappa family genes, as Dweezil's guitar virtuosity echoes that of Frank. He pays homage to his father by performing songs from the entire Frank Zappa repertoire.
