Music Reviews of Red Carpet Massacre (Snys)Music Review: Massacre of DD's sound Rating: 2 Stars
I cannot stress enough how bad this album is. Two stars only because it's Duran duran and falling down song is catchy and good enough.
Well, just as I feared, Timbalad guy screwed it all. The moment the songs start, you already know who done it. And it's not a positive thing. Timbaland is overhyped and overused producer that always produces the same piece of crap, no matter what artist he works with. It's ALWAYS the same!
I can't believe Duran Duran wanted to be in the same wagon! He ruined the songs, made them bland, using very annoying buzzing (farting) sound and the same minimalistic rhythm.
Actually, the other Timba guy (Timberlake) did a pretty good job. Can't blame him though.
I really like when the group change its sound in every album, but that change has to be something really fresh and good (e.g. Depeche Mode). *This* is neither new (typical timba-like sound) nor good (the songs don't go anywhere).
Ever been to the Duran Duran concert? Know how _energetic_ those guys are on the stage? They can blow you away! Like that energy? Then do not buy this. NONE of the stuff they show on the stage is here.
Bland, annoying and dull.
Music Review: It is what it is.... Rating: 3 Stars
Like many, I'm am indecisive as to whether I love it or hate. I will say that nothing has the intensity, energy, or sexuality of a song like "All She Wants Is" which was written 20 years ago and would be the closest comparison to the "sound" it appears they going for here. Not a big follower of Timbaland or familiar with his work, but I can say I don't understand all the hype surrounding him..I've heard better beats from pre-sets on a Casio. Nile Rodgers, R.I.P.
Ironically, the tracks that seems to work best here and most popular with the fans are the more organic, guitar based songs such as "Box Full O' Honey" and "She's Too Much" Yet even they don't seem to live up to their full potential as John's bass and Roger's live drums are sorely missed and Nicks synths are buried way back in the mix.
I do applaud them for the attempt and somewhat success of a "fresher" sound, however overall the album sounds rushed and under-produced...the compositions could have been fuller with more varied instrumentation, preferably more organic to compliment the dry, sterile, and mechanical beats.
Better luck next time guys...still love ya though.
Music Review: Not one of their stronger albums Rating: 3 Stars
There's some good material here, and it tends to grow on you with repeated listens. "Falling Down" is an appealing song that deserves to go into regular rotation with their many other hits. "Nite Runner" is a song without much to it, but perhaps its repetitiveness is actually part of the plot to make you nod along.
One thing that is striking is that the album begins with several songs which are not particular standouts -- "The Valley" and "Red Carpet Massacre." The latter is more in line with the group's classic sound. However compared to some material that comes along later such as Box Full O'Honey and Dirty Great Monster, they really are some of the stronger songs.
It's unfortunate because the band's previous album, "Astronaut" had an interesting collection of material that ranged around in sound and demonstrated that the band was still perfectly capable of turning out new hits and a good pop sound. This album has a more unified sound, but unfortunately that sound isn't all that interesting. This is probably best enjoyed as individual song purchases rather than a whole album.
Music Review: Try 7 Stars- RCM slays me! Rating: 5 Stars
One star for each-Simon,Nick,John,Roger,Justin,Timbaland & Nate. They all shine brilliantly on this release. Unlike Astronaut, which represented a well crafted and "perfected" safe sound for the guys, RCM is slaying and raw. Many others compare their albums, but I find that trivial considering the line-up changes as well as the producers they choose to work with. However, the last raw album that comes to mind is Notorious, which oddly saw the departure of guitarist Andy Taylor during the recording process similiar to what happened here. Exit Andy, add Dom Brown- enter Justin, Timbaland & Nate Hills and what results is clearly something to admire. I'm not going to dissect each song as I normally do, but "Skin Divers" (oh-woe) is so stuck in my head I think it's driving me under (ha!). The title track rocks! Falling Down is haunting and surreal. Nite runner is catchy. Box Full O' Honey is sweet. Tempted and Zoom In are dance infused while Dirty Great Monster is very clever. There's something for everyone here, but if you expect the same ole same ole- dilate your mind- this is a true creation and it's HOT.
Music Review: Guilty Pleasure... Rating: 5 Stars
4,5 stars.
I always had very mixed feelings about Duran Duran. They were the ultimate 80's band, and I HATE 80's music, and Duran Duran recorded som stinkers in their heyday (Wild Boys, anyone?). But if you look back, they've also managed to write a dozen (or so) rather classy pop songs during their long-lasting career. Admittedly, for me, they've been few and far between, but I do think that the following songs deserve some respect: Planet Earth, Save A Prayer, Notorious, Skin Trade, A Matter Of Feeling, I Don't Want Your Love, All She Wants Is, Too Late Marlene, Edge Of America, Ordinary World, Come Undone, Someone Else Not Me, Pop Trash Movie and the unreleased demo A Matter Of Fact. And pretty much every song off Red Carpet Massacre. I don't care that much for Dirty Great Monster, but the majority of the other songs are of very high quality, my favorites being the Timbaland productions Night Runner (very funky beat), Skin Divers, and Tempted, as well as Falling Down (their best ballad since Ordinary World), the delicious Box O' Honey and She's Too Much (seemingly about Simon Le Bon's daughter).
