Music reviews of Red Carpet Massacre (Snys)

Music Review: Don't believe the rumours...It's not all R'n'B....[Thoughts from the UK]
Rating: 4 Stars

Following on from the trite 'Astronaut' album, Duran Duran release 'Red Carpet Massacre'. This album is quite simply the best Duran Duran album since 'Big Thing' back in 1988. Fresh, slick, polished and melodic, this is Duran Duran evolving into something new.

First things first. Don't believe the rumours!! This is not an R'n'B album. To be honest I was expecting 12 dull R'n'B tracks the way people were going on about it, but that is just so misleading. This band has never stuck to one sound, they have always tried to be different, they change with the times, which is what makes Duran Duran special. They could just put their feet up and live off former glories, but they choose to try something new and exciting and here it pays off...big time!!

What I really like about this album is that unlike some previous Duran Duran albums, I don't have to skip tracks. Fabulous opener 'The Valley' sets the tone and then the albums title track just blows the whole thing wide open. I must admit to great concern about Duran Duran working with Timberlake & Timbaland, but as much as it pains me (I don't really like R'n'B!!).........it works!! 'Nite Runner and 'Skin Divers' are both infectious and melodic and fuse the Duran/Timberlake/Timbland sound together pefectly. 'Falling Down' is a good song, but it just lacks something. It has a languid feel and doesn't quite take off. I can't help thinking that it was the "safe" choice as the first single and probably not the greatest idea they could have gone with. 'Box Full O' Honey' is very simple, stripped down and laid back and is just stunning. 'Tempted' has to be a single, upbeat, catchy (stuck in my head!) and could fill the dancefloor, really great stuff. Instumental 'Tricked Out' is amazing and sounds like Duran Duran covering The Killers covering Duran Duran!! If that makes sense!! The Timbaland produced 'Zoom In' is a grower, didn't think much of it to start with, but eventually it worms its way into your head. In the same league as the brilliant 'Still Breathing' (the only GREAT song on Astronaut!), 'She's Too Much' is a touching melodic ballad that gets better and better with every listen, it is classic Duran Duran. Written by Simon LeBon for his daughter, the emotional message certainly gets across to the listener. Just when you think the album might tail off towards the end it doesn't. The last 2 songs on the album keep up the momentum. 'Dirty Great Monster' is great and has a 'Liberty' album feel to it....in a good way! 'Last Man Standing' is very catchy and sounds like a new Arcadia track and finishes the album off in fine style.

I really can't fault this album and I say that as a fan of 24+ years. Okay, so the Duran Duran on RCM don't sound anything like the Duran Duran from 1981, but did the Duran Duran on 'Notorious' from 1986 sound anything like Duran Duran from 1981 either?? Some fans see this album as "selling out", but they have got it so wrong. RCM sees Duran Duran moving on and showing creative progression, which is surely a positive thing, isn't it? Do we really want Duran Duran to turn into UB40 or Bon Jovi and stick with the same sound and end up with every song sounding exactly the same as the last? No thanks!

This album feels like it has been the most controversial album the band have ever made. Why? because of the fans. Duran Duran fans are VERY hard to please. How many times have I heard recently "Where's the bass?, there not enough bass!!". and the old favourite "Whats this?.....it doesn't sound anything like 'Rio'?!?!". And finally, I couldn't go without mentioning the 'ATFC' or as its better known the 'ANDY TAYLOR FAN CLUB', who are just a little bit bitter about Andy leaving the band. Nearly every 1 star bad review of this album that I have seen mentions Andy Taylor. Comments such as "This album is awful....no wonder Andy Taylor left!" and "Good on Andy Taylor....he left just in time!". I think that we get the message now folks, thank you. The funny thing is, I am an Andy Taylor fan myself and I appreciate his reasons for moving on and I can also see why he left, as the overall sound of RCM would not have suited his own style.

For anyone left wondering why such a glowing review has only got 4 stars, well I dropped the 5th star due to some classic dodgy Simon LeBon lyrics!! You'll know them when you hear them!!! In summary, RCM is a fantastic album and a truly great return to form for a band who have been doing this for nearly 30 years and hopefully for a little while longer yet.

Please open up your ears and enjoy.......I know I did.

Description of Red Carpet Massacre (Snys)

Jewel case version with 8-page booklet.
It happens only two tracks in: Just when you're re-acquainting yourself with Simon Le Bon's sexy whine and settling in for a disc full of digestible, modernized new wave, Red Carpet Massacre takes a turn toward the Timberlake-like. By the time you reach track eight, the sizzling instrumental "Tricked Out," the effect is so pronounced you can't be sure whose chocolate got into whose peanut butter. But you do know this, and with more certainty than you once placed in the power of the "Hungry Like the Wolf" video to get you through your teen-age day: Massacre is one hot record. Timbaland, the brilliant knob-twister behind Timberlake's FutureSex/Love Sounds, as well as his protegé, Danja, imbue it with buoyancy and way-past-midnight moodiness; on a couple of tracks, most notably "Skin Divers," which includes a short rap verse, Timbaland pitches in on vocals, and on a couple of others, he taps Timberlake to help out. That the contributions of that tag-team of hitmakers take nothing away from the tightness and characteristic chic of the band--that they enhance the hypnotic sheen of Duran Duran, rather than subjugate it--makes a certain sense. After all, if Timberlake brought sexy back, it had probably only been missing since Duran Duran's mid-80s heyday. --Tammy La Gorce
