Music Review: My Pre-view Re-view of All You Need Is Now
Rating: 4 Stars
1. All You Need Is Now (album version) - 4 Stars
This feels like two songs in one. From Nick Rhodes' opening schizo synths to Simon's aggressive "Wild Boys" style vocals the song somehow morphs into a sweeping, melodic chorus that takes the song in a completely different direction. The synth then returns and drags you back into schizo-land, then back to the anthemic chorus. Somehow it all works.
2. Blame The Machines - 3 Stars
Another song that feels like two songs in one. The verse and chorus seem disconnected, jumping rather suddenly from one to the other. This mixing of the beats could work, I guess. The over-dub of a female GPS control voice in the bridge is also incongruous, and the song just kind of ends. Should probably be a mid-album track rather than up front.
3. Being Followed - 3 Stars
Starts off promisingly with some great lyrics by Simon about paranoia and a solid disco-rock beat. The chorus follows perfectly the first two times, then breaks down a bit in the bridge before falling completely apart at the fade with unnecessary siren effects and Simon actually singing "La-la-la-la-la-la-la" at the end. Weird, but it works.
4. Leave a Light On - 5 Stars
A welcome change of pace with a beautiful ballad. This one is the closest thing on the album to "Save a Prayer". Begins with a lovely synth melody from Nick and a great lyric from Simon. "I know... I swear..." Simon croons as the chorus begins and it's compelling stuff. At only 4:23 you wish it was a minute longer to reach epic ballad status. Still, great stuff.
5. Safe (In the Heat of the Moment) - 2 stars
In which the band takes a detour into rap (that worked so well on "Red Carpet Massacre") and the song completely deflates the album. A weird kind of funky tune that really goes nowhere with Ana Matronic rapping over the verse.
6. Girl Panic! - 4 Stars
Could I give this a higher rating? Yeah, I could. It's not perfect, but it's damn close. A great rock song where once again Nick's synths (and lyrics!) stand out along with Simon's singing and Roger's percussive drumming. Just an up-tempo fun rock song that works perfectly from beginning to end. The only incongruity is the use of a synth solo in the bridge and fade out that was once leaked as part of a different song ("Pale Blue Planet") and sounds promising enough to stand on its own. Too bad about that part.
7. A Diamond In The Mind - 3 Stars
The first of the AYNIN "reprises". A soft string melody with a slow-paced vocal overdub by Simon that's ruined a bit by inserting a vocal track from the regular track over the top.
8. The Man Who Stole a Leopard - 3 Stars
This is a weird art-school song, from the "Tel Aviv" like synth opening to the "Chauffer"-like sequencer, featuring a "dialogue" between hunter (Simon) and prey (guest vocalist Kelis). The newscast voiceover at the end goes on bit too long, distracting from the song. I find this song disturbing, and I won't listen to it before bed or I'd never get to sleep. I guess that means I like it.
9. Other People's Lives - 2 Stars
Sometimes there's a reason songs are left off an album. This track is a classic example of B-side material that just doesn't cut it, and quite frankly, both lyrically and musically, it's kind of embarrassing next to the quality of the other songs on the album.
10. Mediterranea - 4 Stars
A slower paced number with a bit of an up-tempo chorus that would have served the main album release much better than a track like "Safe". Great lyrics and vocals again from Simon ("9:00am, the beach-tequila mayhem, sum of all suburban daydreams") with a solid rhythm and good guitar work from Dom Brown(!). Love it.
11. Too Bad You're So Beautiful - 2 stars
Sometimes there's a reason songs are left off an album. Though marginally better than "Other People's Lives", this is still pretty low-quality B-Side stuff. It could be better if they cut down the time by eliminating the jarring stop-start staccato vocal bridge just before the chorus. Perhaps someone with some good editing software will do us all a favor and take those parts out, thus shortening the song from its unnecessary 5 minute running time.
12. Runway Runaway - 3 stars
The album's feel-good rock/pop song equivalent of "Last Chance On The Stairway" from "Rio" Very good but simple lyrics from Simon. Just barely three minutes long then it quickly fades out. Maybe not memorable but you find yourself humming and singing along while it's playing.
13. Return To Now - 3 Stars
The second reprise of AYNIN.
14. Before the Rain - 4 stars
A very good closer. A slow-paced number that evokes the same spacey feel of songs like "Winter Marches On" or "The Chauffer". Great lyrics and vocal again by Simon. Love the strings at the end.
Bonus Tracks:
15. Networker Nation - 3 Stars
B-side Material, but good B-Side material. Could be a good companion piece to "Blame the Machines" as mid-album track. Unlike "Too Bad You're So Beautiful" they keep it nice and short.
