Music Reviews of Ellington At Newport 1956

Music Review: America' Greatest Composer
Rating: 5 Stars

Flannery O'connor once said of William Faulkner: You don't want your mule wagon on the tracks when the Dixie Limited is coming through. That's what Duke Ellington was: No one was on his level! Not Basie, not Gershwin, not Charles Ives... To my mind, he'll always be America's greatest composer. This cd just pounds away, it's loud and booming and you'd better get out of the way! The DUKE is coming down the tracks!

Music Review: Throw Away Your Old Copy
Rating: 5 Stars

A nearly 44-year haze has been lifted from this recording and the result is as audible as it is significant. The bottom line: What was previously a muffled, faked recording is now The Real Thing with fantastic sound quality. If you've previously owned this recording you can throw it away. This discovery is one of the most significant Jazz releases in years and deserves to be in everyone's collection.

Music Review: OUTTA SIGHT
Rating: 5 Stars

I heard the whole thing last night on WKCR (NY), spun by producer Phil Schapp, as the finale for the 2 week long Ellington 24/7 special. It easily lives up to the impossible moniker as one of the best jazz concerts ever. You have to hear it to beleive it - it will blow your socks off. It is truly a miraculous concert with an amazing history. This record will become as standard as a no. 2 pencil.

Music Review: Finally!
Rating: 5 Stars

Well, the 43 year wait is over and we can finally hear the Newport Jazz Festival show as it ACTUALLY happened! Up till now all we had was about 20% live and 80% re-recorded studio material. Gonsalves' 27 chorus solo has been talked about over the past four decades much in the same way as Babe Ruth's "called shot," the stuff of myth and legend.

Well, here it is. WOW!

10 STARS!
