Music reviews of Sinner

Music Review: Check this band out.
Rating: 5 Stars

Who the (heck) is Drowning Pool? I asked myself the same exact question, until I heard their single Bodies, on a local rock station. Before buying the CD I wanted to check out who Drowning Pool was and where they were from. The CD, Sinner was produced by Jay Baumgardner (PAPA ROACH, ORGY, COAL CHAMBER). The band consists of Dave Williams on vocals, Christian Joseph on guitar, Stevie Benton on bass guitar, and Mike Luce on Drums. They are a quartet from Dallas, TX, that have taken their lives, their beliefs and incorporated it into their music. The band is named Drowning Pool because of their bassist Benton. The band needed to come up with something original and Benton remembered when he first lost his virginity to a movie entitled, Drowning Pool. Go figure. Drowning Pool is a mixture of Hard Rock, and Goth Metal that collaborates for heavy listening. The track list is as follows:
1. Sinner
2. Bodies
3. Tear Away
4. All Over Me
5. Reminded
6. Pity
7. Mute
8. I Am

9. Follow
10. Told You So
11. Sermon

Sinner
The first song on the track comes with a sure head-banging approach. You look at me, but you dont see, understand Im a sinner. Look at all these peopleLOOK AT ME, look at all these people, LOOK AT ME! Williams claims this song is heavy on relationships and not believing in organized religion. Quick, sharp and to the point I give it 3/4 stars.

Bodies
This is the song they are best known for, and it has gotten a lot of airplay on MTV. Reiterating the phrase, Let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor, at a slow pace and then speeding it up by getting louder and louder until Williams screams in a raspy manner delivers for a great effect. 1nothing wrong with me, 2nothing wrong with me, 3nothing wrong with me, 4nothing wrong with me! Williams explains that this song is about the feeling kids get when they are all unified while moshing at a concert. Everyone is jumping all around you, some are head banging, and others are falling, hence the line, let the bodies hit the floor. Its definitely an upbeat song with thrashy wa-wa effects. I give it 4/4 stars.

Tear Away
This song is all about respecting and valuing you above others. I dont care about anyone else but me. The ever-familiar sound of heavy guitars similar to that of Korn, sounds like everything else out there today. Theres a stop time approach with a pretty guitar solo amongst all the chaos in the song. 2/4 stars.

All Over Me
This song opens up with some funky guitar playing that draws the audience in. Something I just might regret, something you will not forget, maybe I should go away, everything I love to take, all over meall over me Sounds like another relationship that has left this person to feel confused and uncertain to where the relationship is headed. The relationship is changing this person and it doesnt sound like the outlook is going too well. ¾ stars.

Reminded

Everywhere this person goes, they are reminded of you. The feeling of trying hard to forgot someone but you just cant. I love how Drowning Pool repeats some of the lyrics over and over as if to show you that they are reminded. The title of this song fits perfect with the lyrics and it blends in with heavy thrashy guitars. Its like a sickness, a carousel going around and around in your head, and Drowning Pool makes you feel that.4/4 stars.

Pity and Mute are direct opposites of one another. Pity is a more heavy song with more yelling, while Mute has slower guitars and the reiteration of theres nothing left here to talk about. This is about another relationship that has made this person become mute by having nothing left to talk about. 2/4 stars for both.

I Am
This is a personal favorite, just because I can relate to it a lot. The things I want I cant have, everyone has wanted things they couldnt have, so I am sure it can relate to others, as well. Williams again talks about the sickness through this song. I think the sickness is how one feels when they are in a relationship and how they cant get their significant other out of their head. In every relationship throughout this album, it seems as if this person cant win and their significant other is always the victor. Theres no control, no direction in this relationship, and it within itself is a sickness. 4/4 stars.

The tracks 9-11 seem to drag a bit. The first portion of the album is definitely what caught my ear. Willams questions the importance of relationships and the daily wear and tear it can cause on a person. Williams not only questions that but also questions whether or not there is a higher being and with his discoveries there isnt.

Overall this CD is a pretty good buy and I would recommend it. Im glad I discovered this band. The music and lyrics are inspiring and hard rocking. They are a great outing for those negatives out there feeling that the world is not in their favor. Its angst music for anyone who feels angst. Drowning Pool has taken their thoughts and gathered them up on Sinner to show that through everything they have become better and stronger individuals. Similar sounding bands are Coal Chamber, Rammestein, Korn, White Zombie, Mr.Bungle and Godsmack. Check this group out today. (...)

Description of Sinner

Dallas four-piece Drowning Pool set the rock world on fire this summer with their debut album SINNER. Even before the album's release date, the band has been named to perform on the OZZFEST tour, and their "Bodies" video has gone into BUZZWORTHY rotation on MTV.

The album, produced by Jay Baumgardner (Papa Roach, Coal Chamber, Orgy), combines Drowning Pool's serious heaviness with the energy of their live shows. The single "Bodies" is destined to become THE moshpit anthem for the youth of today, and there's a lot more where that came from!

Intense, dynamic, and full of seething rage, Drowning Pool's powerful debut finds ardent (and sometimes screaming) vocalist Dave Williams mining topics ranging from religion ("Sinner") to relationships ("Reminded") to fine effect, creating a nu-metal opus that's rock-solid from start to finish. "Bodies" boasts an irresistible, insinuating growling chorus ("Let the bodies hit the floor"), with the tune's melodic, suspenseful verses providing the perfect buildup for the cathartic chorus. Williams's impressive whisper-to-a-scream delivery in "Tear Away" and the unbridled energy of "Told You So" are also striking. The Texas quartet's post rap-rock heaviness is aggro yet melodic, not to mention believable, credible, and intelligent. Their smart lyrics, chunky rhythms, and punchy production (by Jay Baumgardner of Papa Roach fame) make this music for the Ozzfest generation. --Katherine Turman
