Music reviews of Blackout

Music Review: ...Not the Band They Thought They'd Be
Rating: 3 Stars

Dropkick Murphys are slipping. I won't be so cruel to the band ,as former fans who mostly quit listening when Mike McLogan left, by simply denouncing everything the band does or has tried to do by labeling them "sellouts" for *gasp* being liked by people! (When did having an increasing fan-base throughout the planet because you're good at what you do make someone a sellout? If thats the case, I'd hate to see what you people think of the Clash...) So, I'll break it down real quick LP by LP, as opposed to song for song as most people prefer to do, and end with this release.

"Do or Die"-One of the best punk albums of the 1990s,certainly the best Oi/Streetpunk album. Hardcore sounds with the celtic twist. The whole thing was a tribute of sorts to the working man, the drinking man, and the Irish man.
"Gangs All Here"-The first album featuring Al Barr, formerly the front man of legendary Boston Oi! band The Bruisers. Much louder and Hardcore, must less Irish/Celtic influence. Another of the 90s best albums. Showed that despite their growing popularity, and the loss of their front man and co-founder, they were still the best American punk band around.
"Sing Loud Sing Proud"-Desperately underrated. The loss of Rick Barton sent any fans who were upset but could deal with Mike McLogan's absence running far far away. The band decided that instead of trying to recreate the sounds of the first two albums with an almost entirely different line-up, they'd go back to their Celtic roots. Still sticking with themes of the Working Man vs. The World, the album is less powerful on a punk level, but much MUCH better musically.

and now, for this album...
I think they're trying too hard. Although the themes are the same on this album as in the first three, and all their singles and EPs, this album shows they're losing their grip. For about eight years now, DKM has been THE Boston Streetpunk band to look up to. With so many crappy street-punk bands out there these days (Casualites, Lower Class Brats, Escaped...and lets face it, the Forgotten just aren't that good either) a band like Dropkick's is/was necessary. With this album, I can see even they are losing it a bit though. The songs sound more Irish driven than Punk, and although that seemed to work well on "Sing Loud," on "Blackout" its quite dissapointing. It's soft, too soft. Melodic, far too melodic. And Ken grabs the mic FAR too much for my liking. Its nice that he wants his voice heard; it is after all, his band, but Al is the frontman, and has a much more powerful voice. And musically, the boys need to try again. Dropkicks were Streetpunk with borderline Hardcore qualities. Now, they're Irish rock with borderline Pop-punk qualities. Not that every song is bad, but every song is far from good. The only song I probably coudln't listen too AT ALL, is the opening tract. My two favorites are "Kiss Me I'm $h*t face" and "The Dirty Glass." They're both hilarious, and sound good. Those are the only two songs that truly stand-out though, especially when compared to the songs on DKM's previous three releases. If you're new to the Murphys, get Do or Die and move up from there. If you're an ex-fan who is becomming discouraged, I am now starting to agree. I still have faith, though, that they're not down and out quite yet. Bands like this have a tendancy to drop one helluva bomb on ya when you're not expecting, and I think DKM will have a comeback album here soon.
