Music reviews of Leitmotif

Music Review: Full of raw expression.
Rating: 5 Stars

This is an outstanding album.

Some people have said that dredg is trying to be too artsy or whatever else, and that people are only giving good reviews to try and appear different. Well its true, dredg is very different, and it could also be true that there are other reasons than the quality of the album to people giving good reviews - maybe to appear more 'intelligent' that most other people as someone has put.

But think about it, music is a form of human expression. Emotion is a major ingredient in music as an artform, whether it be a love for creating, a personal experience, or a concept. And if the listener feels that coming through, if you can feel the emotion coming through, I think it is safe to say that the artist stayed true to whatever your personal definition is for REAL MUSIC - and what I mean by this I hope you know, something created on the basis of expression and on the need to express, the need and NECESSITY to bring out something inside of you. I really do hope people agree with this at least.

Now if you are moved by the end product or not, that is up to the listener and what moves one person may not move another. But I think the most important point is the passion and emotion that the creator has used to produce the results.

- imho, it shouldn't be the fact that the album does not have a conventional structure, or the fact that it has an original 'concept', neither the fact that 'out of the ordinary' (if you would call it that) instruments like piano or cellos were used, that most influences someones decision to give a good review. -

**Of course these are all important factors, as well as techinical skill and quality of production, but they are like the end results -in place of a better word- the 'essence' should take a prominent place over the visible end products, what mindset was used to create - this would affect what we hear ultimately on the disc, thus affect all the other details such as the kind of instruments used, structure of the album and so on. listening for that essence is the simplest thing. what do you feel?

What triggered me to write this is that people have said 'people are only giving good reviews because it is not mainstream' or something along that line. Yes, some reviews do put the use of un-ordinary instruments as a reason for the album being good etc. but the reason for that perhaps *could* be that the band NEEDED those to express themselves, not to just be *different* and 'pretending to be artsy' by experimenting. No one except dredg knows the truth there. But you can listen. and make a decision for yourself - and I respect that people are not supposed to all come to the same conlcusion. thats the nature (and purpose too?!) of music anyway. but hopefully, people will consider all this, that there might be another motive to being original than for the sake of being original and even if the music sounds horrifying to their ears be able to decide if this is the real stuff or completely 'borrowed' off of 500 other bands. One interesting point to consider - no human being on Earth is identical, so if we all created something that WE thought of ourselves in our head it would almost definitely be original anyway - wheres the point on 'trying to be original'? does it make ANY sense to bash something as pretentious originality...??? All that I said so far is only my opinion though, and I am only saying what I think personally at this moment in time. ;)

For me, when I listened to the 30 secs of the symbol song in the sampler, I was just blown away. dredg have something there. maybe emotion. raw and plentiful. el cielo is more tamed, similar but very different. I wonder what dredg are going to come up with in the future, and I don't care for the points of 'differentness' to other bands as much as I care for the energy, I hope that one thing at least will remain and become very contagious for future and (fingers crossed) present generations. :D
