Music Review: What if Led Zeppelin was a Reggae Band fronted by Elvis?

If you were insane enough to take Led Zeppelin's music, have the ghost of Bob Marley arrange them reggae style, and then get a 300 bound Elvis impersonator to be the lead singer, then that should have to work, right? That would be the case with Dread Zeppelin's novelty rock album "Un-Led-Ed." Doing the vocals on this Pasadena based group was Tortelvis (Greg Tortell), backed by guitarists Jah Paul Jo (Joe Ramsey) and Carl Jah (Carl Haasis), bassist Butt-Boy (Gary Putman), percussionist Ed Zeppelin (Bryant Fernandez), and drummer Fresh Cheese (Paul Masselli). The result was musical mystery, um, history as "Un-Led-Ed" rocketed to #116 on the Billboard 200 chart of top albums in 1990. But the key here is that while the idea is crazy, these guys were serious about the music and did a great job of making these songs a series of good jokes.
There are two chief charms to "Un-Led-Ed." On the one hand you have inspired bits of insanity such as doing the music for Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" while launching into the lyrics for Elvis's hit "Heartbreak Hotel" (ergo, ""Heartbreaker (At the End of Lonely Street") and the reading excerpts from Herman Melville's classic American novel while banging away on "Moby Dick." On the other hand you have the indisputable fact that Dread Zeppelin is also capable of kicking it, as they prove on the last half of "Bring It On Home," which is my favorite track on the album. The story is that Robert Plant himself had occasion to listed to "Un-Led-Ed" and professed a preference for Dread Zeppelin's version of "Your Time Is Going to Come" over the original, but I would put "Bring It On Home" as the song that should get that honor. The slow groove they develop on their version of "The Immigrant Song" is not bad either.
The reggae influence is pretty heavy on "Whole Lotta Love" but never really becomes overbearing. For my money this is clearly the best of the Dread Zeppelin albums, especially given the turmoil the group went through in the wake of its unexpected success. But if you want to hear Led Zeppelin done differently
then the only thing better than "Un-Led-Ed" would be the collection(s) of covers of "Stairways to Heaven" from down under (not only Elvis version of the classic song but early Beatles, Sgt. Pepper Beatles, Doors, etc.). At least check out the wav files and see if your curiosity is not whetted just a wee bit. Then you can give yourself over to aural pleasure and listen to the whole wacky album.
