Having been a fan of Donny & Marie since in the 1970's, I've cherished these LP's for years, playing the well worn vinyl on my record player and wishing they were available on CD. That day has come. Though time has cast its long shadow over the many years since Donny & Marie's variety show graced the airways, the music on this double album CD is still a fun backwards glance and holds up remarkably well.
Included on Deep Purple are many classics from the television show: A Little Bit Country-A Little Bit Rock and Roll, May Tomorrow Be A Perfect Day, as well as more well known hits like Deep Purple, and It Takes Two. Though some songs come off as corny and don't quite survive the cheese factor (A My Name is Alice, Weeping Willow, Butterfly) others (It Takes Two) are particularly poignant, holding up as expertly written and performed.
The New Season songs show an obvious maturation, both stylistically and vocally. Anytime Sunshine, Show Me, You Broke My Heart and Sing are strong examples of Donny and Marie's vocal abilities. The collection ends with We Got Love, an anthem-like song with a groovy 70's era rhythm and orchestration which captures the sound for this collection of songs. Fans of Donny and Marie still have love for these two performers and for those fans, this CD is a must have.
