Music Review: Donna Mixes It Up In The Making

From the beginning to the middle of the 70's there was a variety of dance funk music that was inspired not only by the extended runs of James Brown but was being refined early by people such as Isaac Hayes,Gamble & Huff in Phillidelphia and Barry White into a sound that at that really had no particular label. However it was being danced to at clubs called discotecques where DJ's,not necessarily live bands were in charge of playing and extending the records the club goers were dancing to. In Munich,Germany two producers named Giorgio Moroder and Pete Ballotte had with them in 1975 a singer with whom they created a song and an album which actually gave this genre an identity. This album contained only six cuts and it's centerpiece was the song that wound up becomming this albums title. It was an epic lengh song called "Love To Love You Baby". Inspired by Serge Gainbourg'sJe T'aime...Moi Non Plus this song features the title of the song repeated pretty consistantly in Summers high alto voice along with her sexually satisfied groaning. What is so captivating to me anyway is the music. In terms of how most people stereotypically views a disco tune from the 70's this song doesn't exactly qualify. It does have a pretty steay 4/4 beat but so do a lot of other things. The strings,the wah wah's and mean bassline (which gets it's own individual segment by the way) are funk personified from top to bottom a vein that's a pure extention of Barry White's productions of the era only less percussive. Again it brings to mind the possibility if disco was more a style of music built around a dance than the common perception of it being the reverse of that-a series of dance steps to go WITH a certain music. Certainly the often neglected stop/start funk jam "Need-A-Man Blues" really gives it away if that question is on your mind. This song is musically straight ahead wah-wah laden funk with a lot of wild drumming with Summer pleading away for romantic longing. "Full Of Emptiness" and "Whispering Waves" are both surprising nods to country soul balladeering whereas "Pandora's Box" makes a vital nod to American Northern Soul. The euro disco sound Summer and Moroder were about to pioneer was not even really in the embryonic stage here as this is heavily funk and soul informed music without the electronic inspired synthesizers that would define her sound and others in the genre in a mere couple of years. However nothing Donna Summer did in the 70's or the other decades to come would ever have been possible if it weren't for the flavors she established on this album.
