Music reviews of AnthologyMusic Review: Donna Summer: THE DONNA SUMMER ANTHOLOGY (1993) Rating: 5 Stars
In 1993, Donna Summer released her twentieth album entitled, THE DONNA SUMMER ANTHOLOGY, a double-disc greatest hits that includes Donna Summer's greatest hits from 1975 to 1992. This is an anthology to not go without.
Disc One: 1975-1979
LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (Single Version)
Original version from the album LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (1975). An awesome song, but I would like to hear the full-length version that runs to 16:51 (sixteen minutes, fifty-one seconds). But still a great song.
COULD IT BE MAGIC (Single Version)
Original version from the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). This is a great cover version. You all should remember the story behind the song when Barry Manilow recorded this track, which was the original recording. I'm not in the mood to tell that story again. If you want to know the story, look at my review for Donna Summer's album, A LOVE TRILOGY.
TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT (Single Version)
Original version from the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). A great song, but I would rather hear the full-length version, which literally runs to 18:00 (eighteen minutes). But still a great song.
SPRING AFFAIR
From the album FOUR SEASONS OF LOVE (1976). Another classic.
LOVE'S UNKIND
From the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Great song.
I FEEL LOVE
From the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Another classic, that makes me want to dance.
ONCE UPON A TIME
From the album ONCE UPON A TIME...(1978). Great song.
RUMOUR HAS IT
From the album ONCE UPON A TIME...(1978). Awesome.
I LOVE YOU
From the album ONCE UPON A TIME...(1978). Great song.
LAST DANCE
From the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY (1978). Awesome party song.
MacARTHUR PARK (Promotional Single Version)
Original version from the single MacARTHUR PARK (1978). Now, this is actually the original recording of Donna Summer's cover, but this is the promotional single version, meaning that there is a minute and ten seconds cut from it, where we do not hear the final chorus. But this still a classic song.
HEAVEN KNOWS (Single Version)
Original version from the single HEAVEN KNOWS (1978). This is no different the original version. The beginning of this version is just five seconds longer. That's the big difference. But still an awesome song.
HOT STUFF (12" Single Version)
Original version from the album BAD GIRLS (1979). This is the version that had appeared on Donna Summer's 1987 compilation, THE DANCE COLLECTION. Still a "Hot" classic.
BAD GIRLS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Another classic.
DIM ALL THE LIGHTS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Awesome.
SUNSET PEOPLE
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Classic.
Disc Two: 1979-1992
NO MORE TEARS (ENOUGH IS ENOUGH) (performed by Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer) (Single/Radio Version)
Original version from Barbra Streisand's album WET (1979). Still an awesome Diva duet, even though this is the no-justice single/radio version. Still an instant classic, though.
ON THE RADIO (Long Version)
From the album ON THE RADIO: GREATEST HITS VOLUMES I & II (1979). Even though the single/radio/album version runs only 4:00 (four minutes) long, this long version, running 5:50 (five minutes, fifty seconds because of the hidden third verse) makes the song even better than before. Still a great song.
THE WANDERER
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). Great song.
COLD LOVE
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). Awesome song.
I'M A RAINBOW
Previously unreleased. This is the title track to Donna Summer's 1981 unreleased album entitled, I'M A RAINBOW. When Donna Summer had recorded the album back in 1981, it was Giorgio Moroder who declined the album's 1981 release. Great ballad.
DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA
Previously unreleased. This is the second track from Donna Summer's 1981 unreleased album entitled, I'M A RAINBOW. This compilation album is the first Donna Summer album to officially contain this track (which is the infamous song performed on the balcony scene to the infamous Broadway hit, "Evita"), and "I'm A Rainbow". Great rendition, but Madonna's rendition is even better.
LOVE IS IN CONTROL (FINGER ON THE TRIGGER)
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Great song.
STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Great song.
SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). Awesome song about the hard-working women.
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE (performed by Donna Summer & Musical Youth)
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). Cool song.
THERE GOES MY BABY
From the album CATS WITHOUT CLAWS (1984). Great rendition of the old 1950s song.
SUPERNATURAL LOVE
From the album CATS WITHOUT CLAWES (1984). Great song.
ALL SYSTEMS GO
From the album ALL SYSTEMS GO (1987). An amazing song. But I wish that "Jeremy" was also included on this compilation.
THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). Awesome tune. I could dance my fricking butt of to this one.
I DON'T WANNA GET HURT
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). Awesome.
WHEN LOVE CRIES
From the album MISTAKEN IDENTITY (1991). Good song.
FRIENDS UNKNOWN
From the album MISTAKEN IDENTITY (1991). Great song.
CARRY ON
From Giorgio Moroder's album FOREVER DANCING (1992). This is a great song, and it was featured on Giorgio Moroder's Various Artists album entitled FOREVER DANCING. Great song.
If you are dying to get all of Donna Summer's greatest hits on one album, then this is the album for you. This is a great album, and you'll love it.
