Music Review: Fine performances of two very different sides of Schoenberg

This DG recording contains two of Arnold Schoenberg's pieces for augmented or diminished string quartets, "Verklarte Nacht" op. 4 for string sextet (1899) and the String Trio op. 45 (1946). The LaSalle Quartet perform, joined by additional cellist Jonathan Pegis and violist Donald McInnes. The LaSalle Quartet performances of Schoenberg's pieces for ordinary quartet have been reissued by Brilliant Classics, but this particular recording is becoming difficult to find and you should snatch it up right away.
"Verklarte Nacht" (Transfigured Night) is Schoenberg's long one-movement tone poem that seeks to musically represent a poem by Richard Dehmel. While this might be Schoenberg's most popular composition among subscriber audiences, I'm chiefly a fan of more modernist stylings and, as bold as Schoenberg is sometimes said to have been here, it's generally ordinary Late Romanticism. However, Schoenberg does show exquisite skill with instrumental balance, which not all composers who turn their hands to the quartet (or quartet+) genre have.
We then jump to the very end of Schoenberg's career with his String Trio. This might as well be the work of a different composer. Even in Schoenberg's twelve-tone period he was retaining the old Viennese tradition in form and rhythm, and works like the Piano Concerto and the "Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte" can be listened to as if they were rather quirky Romanticism. With the String Trio, that linkage to the past is much less evident. This 20-minute piece initially seems a fractured collection of individual episodes that veer between joy and nightmare. Eventually the listener will be able to make out a clearer structure, but the piece nonetheless is much more radical than most Schoenberg and appeals to that part of me who loves Ligeti's Second or Rihm's quartets. I'm not drawn back to it often, but when I do listen to it I find it very entertaining.
The LaSalle Quartet give excellent performances here and in spite of the recording's age, the sound is quite fine. This disc is the best bet for Schoenberg fans wishing to cover these two pieces in their collections.
