Music Review: Pretty Cool Coolfin

The first three tracks are superb - number's 2&3, standouts. I bought the album for the haunting 2nd track 'Lowlands of Holland' and will never tire of it! The remainder of the album seems to lose impetus, but the musicianship remains superb. The accompaniment is spare and perfect and the mixing lends an essential mellow feel, so the reels don't sound raw. It's an album I rarely play completely through because some songs irritate after a while: 'False Fly' has a repetitive refrain, and the Moravian folk song seems at odds with the other content. Donal Lunny has his name writ so large that there are absolutely no cover notes, and you need a magnifying glass to see the other artists! To my surprise, I find Sharon Shannon plays accordian, and Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill sings on a couple of tracks. I have no other Donal Lunny to compare with, but am happy to own this one, if just for the first 3 tracksCoolfin.
