Music reviews of Trio II (Two)

Music Review: more magic!
Rating: 5 Stars

What is wrong with these people who gripe about the songs being reissues? Did they hear the NPR interview when the ladies sang in the studio, live, impromptu and a capella? I live in Nashville, but I am not a country music fan. I have seen Emmylou perform live, and I own every album of Linda Ronstadt's early work. Each of those voices is unmistakable, even when they sing backup for no credit. " After the Gold Rush" is on Dolly's 1998 album "Treasures" on which she also does "Peace Train" backed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo and against Cat Stevens' objections. She likes the song. Get over it. I always liked " After the Gold Rush" even when I didn't know who wrote it, what it was called or who performed it ( Prelude, #22 on the Billboard top 40 in 1974, in case anybody cares) and neither then did I nor now do I care what it means. I suspect Neil Young didn't either, and I know that Dolly doesn't. She just likes the way it sounds. So do I. No matter who performs it. The lyric change doesn't bother me any more than Streisand's changing the lyrics on "Send In the Clowns" so that it made sense to her. Yes, in both cases the original lyric was preferable. Yes, in both cases I prefer the original. That doesn't mean I don't like the remake.

Let's talk remakes. Linda Ronstadt did a couple of remakes of Buddy Holly songs - among others. . Whitney Houston hit #1 with Dolly's " I will always love you." So what? I hated the remake of the latter, but I still love the song.

Genius is genius and harmony is harmony, no matter what the genre. These ladies do what they do supremely well, and they obviously enjoy singing together. Listen to the weave of the voices.Maybe some of the numbers are remakes. So what? As a previous reviewer pointed out, we can own umpteen versions of a Beethoven or Mozart piece and enjoy every one for its own merits.

I regret that this album doesn't have things like the Kate and Anna McGarrigle songs that were my favorites on the first Trio . But I will listen to this one over and over as I did ( and do) the first one, because the harmonies and the obvious enjoyment of the participants make it special. I bought the Loretta Lynn/Tammy Wynette/Dolly Parton " Honky-Tonk Angels" album for the same reason. It's too hard-core country for me, but I do enjoy the harmonies. Trio II hits my folkie button.

One doesn't have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy a thing done well. I have no interest whatsoever in team sports, but I liked watching Michael Jordan because he was a genius at what he did. I watch the Olympics because those people are dedicated and committed to what they do and they do it very well. The same is true of this album. I don't have to nitpick every song. I just enjoy what they do, and they obviously do too. I hope Trio 3 will hit the market in less than 12 years!

Incidentally, I tried every record store in Nashville and they are all sold out. The people who know about music snapped Trio II up the first day. Without any publicity to speak of.

Description of Trio II (Two)

10 beautiful tracks.
This long-awaited, highly anticipated follow-up to 1987's much-loved initial Trio offering doesn't disappoint. On Trio II, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton weave a spell that's equal parts traditional and contemporary, country and folk, vision and voice. It's their seamless musical blend of these counterpoints--as in the sweet, sweeping harmonies on Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush" or the instrumentally spare acoustic presentation of the Carter Family's "Lover's Return"--that makes these songs such treasures. When individual voices soar and fuse together to create distinct new voices, when instinct leads the way for artistry to follow, the result is perfect harmony, pure magic. --Alexandra Russell
