Music Review: "My earthly stay is over..."

Mike Seeger's death hit me hard but has also made this a beautiful week for me. Whether his own music, field recordings or music of others in and around the world of music he loved and lived, I've spent the past week neck deep in America's true folk musics. Not "folk music" as a smooth little genre, but real folk music. Music created by people who needed it to survive the long days, nights and years of brutal labor, whether that be rearing the kids, lining track or going underground to the coal mines.
Dock Boggs pre-war sides: There was no getting around it this week, I had to listen to him over and over. Coming here to write this review, I am sad to see that this is out-of-print now. I don't like the thought of this being tough or impossible for people to acquire. I even went to County Sales and the Revenant sites to check. It does seem to be gone but hopefully it'll be reprinted in coming years. This is essential to anyone wanting to peek into the heart of American coal country. It's deeper than even that though, in the sense that Dock didn't speak for all people, and he doesn't play a wide-ranging or regional style. Dock's music and style is uniquely his own. It's simultaneously dark, scary and ethereal. Lost Love Blues always makes me think of Washington Phillips of all people, whether that be via Spreading the Word: Early Gospel Recordings or Key to the Kingdom.
Until this set comes back, Dock Boggs: His Folkways Years 1963-1968 will hold you, devastate you, make you smile and tremble. As for the Hayes and Bill Shepherd sides, they can be found on The Music Of Kentucky: Early American Rural Classics, Vol. 2.
If you ever saw Ghost World, hopefully you remember the scene where Enid (Thora Birch) first heard Skip James. There aren't too many other people's music who could have been used to generate the emotion... the Presence of that scene. Dock's music could have done it.
Description of Country Blues: Complete Early Recordings
With his dark genius lauded by the literary likes of Greil Marcus in this compilation's accompanying 64-page hardcover booklet, Dock Boggs is remembered as a grim and tortured man who barely managed to save his soul with a banjo and a handful of songs. Originally recorded in the late 1920s, this collection illuminates the history of murder ballads like "Pretty Polly" from their origins in the English countryside to their more contemporary expressions (see "Polly" by Nirvana). While Boggs experienced popularity when these recordings were made, he retired from music for more than 30 years until being "rediscovered" in the early 1960s.
