Music Review: Scritchy scratchy performances of acidic music makes for one caustic experience

Shostakovich's string quartets are amongst the most nervous and introspective music one can find. For Shostakovich, in the grind-mill of Stalinism where one has every right to be nervous, introspection logically leads to cynicism. At least that is what I hear. He was correct to say that the first was composed in naivety. After that it is all downhill. I don't mean this in a derogatory sense as if his composition skill in this medium became increasingly worthless; he just journeys further into the void that is within all of us. While the seventh, eighth, tenth, eleventh or thirteenth exemplify pure pessimism I think that by the fifteenth he finally learned how to take it all in stride. Occasionally Shostakovich can fall into predictable, mundane melodies in these works like in the last movement of the seventh though fortunately this is rare. I find this to be a much more glaring problem in his symphonies which sometimes border on kitsch. These are largely constructive and interesting pieces though I find myself returning more often to those of Bartok, Shoenberg and Janacek.
I much prefer this interpretation by the Emerson string quartet to the Fitzwilliam on Decca. This is not to say anything bad about that set; its a great bargain. The Fitzwilliam quartet sought to present Shostakovich a largely romantic sentimentalist I suppose with all the swooning tempos and overabundance in the drama where one expects it. Shostakovich strikes me as cheeky pessimist. While the Romanticism is nice and all it ends up feeling misplaced in the structure of Shostakovich. Also the Fitzwilliam quartet lacks the virtuosity of the Emersons, by far. This is evident in the solo sections. They also fail to capture the acrid swerves in the tone of his music. The Emersons do with a vengeance, as if I was tasting a battery. Their "Modernist" approach also applies all the bleakness of Shostakovich's blistered landscape. In my opinion that is what these compositions are all about.
