Music Review: A TALENT IS HONED!

Since this collection only has one review by someone who has seemingly not heard it I thought I should describe what this collection contains. JSP does rule! This is another piece of their ongoing effort to compile all of Django's recordings and it doesn't duplicate their other collections. That said, this is a collection that shows his evolution from playing banjo in musette bands (at 13!) to the development of his unique guitar style. If your looking for the Hot Club you won't find it here. These five discs contain his session work from 1928 to 1937. The first two discs are almost all musette, a French musical style where the accordion is usually the lead instrument. Musette groups began as small combos, usually accordion, banjo and piano or xylophone, but during this time period they burgeoned into full-on orchestras usually with two accordions. I love the stuff, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. The end of the second disc and most of the third and fourth discs contain Reinhardt's work backing up various French matinee idols, most notably Jean Sablon and his sister Germaine. Some of this material is forgettable but much of it is sublime. The tracks with Jean Sablon backed by piano and Django's guitar (particularly La Derniere Bergere) are unbelievably pretty. Django and Grappelli had formed the Hot Club during this time period and their unique style is brought to bear on much of the material on the latter discs. It is very evident in the recordings with Michel Warlop's orchestra. The last disc contains some great session work with Coleman Hawkins and Dicky Wells. In all it's a solid collection that accomplishes what it set out to do, but if you're looking for five discs of that Hot Club sound you should look elsewhere.
