Music reviews of Horseshoes & Handgrenades

Music Review: Close only counts...
Rating: 3 Stars

Let's face it - Disciple has been around for a while. Forming in 1992 as a small, underground groove metal band and working their way up to the household name they've become, Disciple has been through numerous transitions in sound and in member lineup. Lead vocalist Kevin Young is the only remaining member from the band's inception, and even now his vocal prowess takes a different direction on Horseshoes and Handgrenades. After a daring but nearly-perfect leap into the grinding, down-tempo blues-metal sound of previous work Southern Hospitality, Disciple follows up with a more palatable, radio-friendly collection of songs. The result? A great album marred by a lack of directional focus.

Disciple labels themselves as a heavy metal band, and sadly, only a handful of tracks here mirror those roots. Despite excellent production values, the lack of Brad Noah's skillful guitar solos and riffs (except, briefly, on "Watch it Burn") leaves the musical aspect of the album a bit flat. Thankfully, though, we get to hear some trademark energy on tracks such as "Ballad of St. Augustine," "Shot Heard 'Round the World," and "Battlelines," the first of which opens memorably with a classic war-march drum beat slowly developing into a heavy-hitting breakdown where Young displays his vocal talents to their fullest. "Augustine" imitates many of the finer tracks from earlier album Scars Remain, and is easily the best inclusion into this album, with the other more metal-influenced tracks falling close behind. By no means does "harder" mean "better," but it's at Disciple's heaviest that we hear their best.

Unfortunately, Disciple's softer side, while it is in no way bad, winds up as a bit disappointing in such large amounts. To start, the first single "Dear X (You Don't Own Me)" kicks off the whole album with a bit of a whimper. I love the conservative use of orchestration in a rock ballad, but to open a Disciple album with the rhythmic staccato of cellos and violins is rather misleading. Nonetheless, the song is the strongest of the band's soft stuff. Unfortunately, songs such as "Invisible" and "Collide" are as generic as rock comes. They're solid tracks, but lack any musical depth. "Remedy" does not help the situation by sounding exactly like something (or anything) that Nickelback would release. The otherwise great "Revolution: Now" suffers from a strange pause between the second chorus and the bridge that likely sounded better on paper than in reality. I can safely say that "Eternity," "Deafening," and "Worth the Pain" are stronger tracks on the album, even if their generic-sounding titles might indicate otherwise. Still, the vast amount of pop-rock influence on Horseshoes and Handgrenades leaves me in want. However, the lyrical content here is some of Disciple's finest, and the hook-laden melodies never lose steam from start to finish.

Disciple's latest fits squarely in the uncomfortable genre of pop-metal, but manages to turn up a few gems and makes for an enjoyable listen nonetheless. "Dear X" and "Ballad of St. Augustine" are the only two songs that will really stand the test of time, but unlike previous Disciple offerings, there is no truly bad song here. Slowing things down just a bit in places is good when energy cannot sustain an entire album, but Horseshoes and Handgrenades never quite reaches a climax because of its overuse of pop sensibilities. However, in a world where "safe" rock dominates the radios, Horseshoes and Handgrenades is an above-average album that will certain expand the band's appeal despite the lack of the musical focus found on works such as Back Again or Southern Hospitality. When thirteen tracks out of thirteen manage to hit the above-average mark, one cannot complain too much. For those looking for a Christian hard rock album with genuine substance this year, this is it.
