Music Review: A Worthy Addition To Your Collection

I suppose by now Scepter's superb "Golden Hits/Part 1 (1962-1964) will never surface in the digital age. This vinyl obscurity kept Dionne simple and offered love songs spiced with sorrow or warning. Credit the partnership of Bacharach-David-Warwick. They were the greatest vehicles for one another. Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote the songs and Dionne made those songs go. Among the great ones on that platter missing here are "You'll Never Get To Heaven", "Make It Easy On Yourself" and "Any Old Time Of The Day".
Instead Rhino includes the songs that literally charted the most highly. Dionne was an instinctive singer who could blanket any of Burt's tricky time signatures, notably on "Are You There (With Another Girl") and "Anyone Who Had A Heart". She could be wildly agressive when a song demanded it (e.g. "Don't Make Me Over"). She shined when she hid behind her vulnerability with a coolness on "Walk On By" and "Message to Michael". By 1967, her soulful sophistication slipped into easy listening. This sometimes worked, especially on the sarcastic "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" and on the gentle protest of "Windows Of The World". But even with the questionable "Alfie" and "I Say A Little Prayer", Dionne's voice somehow lifted them up a bit. And the elegance remained. That is before the partnership splintered.
