Music Review: It's like an intimate concert..

Let me preface this review by saying not only are these not the original hits they are not even quite the same arrangements as the originals, but that is by design. These recordings from the studio are meant to sound like a live recording at a small venue, and it certainly does. If you are considering buying this album then my guess is you already have one of Dion's hit packages so this will be a refreshing change. Dion is in fine form and I like the arrangements very much (by Dion himself), the hits still sound like the hits with a few nice touches. I might add the sound is very good also.
The opening track, Behind Susan's Eyes, is an excellent new track which can stand up to his best. It is in the same style as his hits, and that is a good thing. A great Ruby Baby follows, sung with a lot of love for his classic standard, if I were at his concert and he sang this song in this manner I would be thrilled. He also sings some of his minor hits like Lovers Who Wander and I Wonder Why, throwing in a bit of She Thinks I Still care on the former and it blends in seemlessly, the latter features original Belmont Carlos Mastrangelo. A few rock standards are included and they are OK but do little for me, nice versions but it is what he does with his signature songs that I really like.
A Teenager in Love and Where or When are still great songs and they sound terrific here. Dion's back up singers and musicians are all top notch. Love Came to Me has a beautiful new ending,Drip Drop rocks out, Donna the Prima Donna is pretty much the original with a bit of Crocodile Rock thrown in, Runaround Sue is played with a lot of energy, The Wanderer has a well placed rap in the middle, and it works! I am no fan of rap and if I like it I'm sure you will also.
Abraham, Martin and John is good also with excellent guitar work. The last number is a new one, Come Heal This Land and again a very good song with a religious pleading for the Lord to come heal this land, a good idea if you ask me.
Over all I like this CD a lot and recommend it. After you have listened to it you have the feeling you just saw Dion at a concert, and he was at his best.
