Music Review: Next to YO FRANKIE this may be Dion's best yet.

First off, I must confess to being a big Dion Dimucci fan. It doesn't matter if it's Dion from the doo wop Belmont days or Dion in his solo days, he is truly a unique singer/musician who is graced with style and "cool". I would have bought this CD sooner but I actually did not know it existed until I searched for Dion's web site and saw it listed. I came to Amazon and read some reviews and bought this CD/DVD package. WOW!! The music on here is classic roots rock and roll done with some great players who have a real empathy for this era of music and the perfect voice to lead it all. It's been said before (and often) that Dion has always embodied rock n'roll "cool" better than any other singer. This CD proves it again. These are not note for note recordings that mirror the originals but they are faithful to the original feel and style. Dion may change a word or two here and there but it is classic Dion and fits his style perfectly. On Amazon I often see rave reviews and five stars on way to many CD's that are just OK. This is a true five star performance.
This CD comes with a DVD where Dion explains why he chose each song and tells stories about his personal involvement with most of the original performers (he knew and toured with almost all of them). Watch this DVD before you listen to the CD and you will get it immediately. The story of his last night with Buddy Holly on February 3, 1959 in Clearlake is worth the price of this CD/DVD set alone. Dion has traditionally been fairly quiet about that night and you can tell from this DVD that the reasons were deep and personal and finally after all these years he talks openly about it. It had a profound effect on his life. He talks about arriving in Fargo the next morning and learning about the crash. He went back into the empty bus in Fargo to be alone and saw Richie Valens blue suit still hanging up on the bus rack and Buddy's guitar case sitting in an otherwise empty seat. You can feel how deeply this 19 year old was affected by the whole incident. Only someone with Dion's personal experience and talent could bring such passion to this music.
