Music Review: Dinu Lipatti performs Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti and Schubert

Among the words that come to mind when listening to Dinu Lipatti in
this CD are the simplicity of his approach, the purity and spirituality of his playing and his poetry.

The Bach Partita no.1 and the Mozart Piano Sonata no. 8 in A Minor, K.300 come from recording sessions at Abbey Road when Lipatti was
in remission from leukemia due to cortisone shots which were new
at the time and quite expensive.

I believe that the Scarlatti Sonatas were recorded at the same time
at Abbey Road but won't swear to it.

The Schubert Impromptus come from Lipatti's last live recital at
Bensancon, only months before he died from leukemia at age 33.
There is applause at the end of Lipatti's Schubert.

Although I have recorded performances of the Bach Partita no. 1 from
Rosalyn Tureck, Glenn Gould, Piotr Anderszewski, Angela Hewitt and others, I can't think of a more poetic, beautiful perforamnce than Lipatti's.

The Bach transcriptions, particularly the Myra Hess arrangement of Bach's Joy of Man's Desiring, are wonderful.

The Scarlatti sonatas are superb as are the Schubert Impromptus.
It is a pity that Lipatti did not live to record more Scarlatti
keyboard sonatas. These are among the finest perforamnces of
Scarlatti keyboard sonatas I know together with those of Vladimir
Horowitz, Maria Tipo and Ivo Pogorelich.

This is an absolutely dispensable CD for anyone who loves the the
composers on this CD, who loves the piano, who appreciates Dinu
Lipatti's pianism and, particularly, anyone who has never heard Lipatti.

The sound is quite good for its time, and evidently has been remastered.
