Music Review: Simply FABULOUS!

I was six when I heard my first Dimitri Tiomkin score, and the film wasn't a western or epic, but a decidedly 'B' movie, "Tarzan and the Mermaids"...and I was held spellbound by Tiomkin's incredibly rich music. Nearly 50 years later, I feel like a kid, again, thanks to "The Alamo: The Essential Film Music Collection"!
Tiomkin's film work has been unfairly neglected, over the years, with a few exceptions, and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra's wide sampling of memorable music will come as a revelation to listeners unfamiliar with the unique Tiomkin 'sound'...besides 'signature' works ("High Noon", "The High and the Mighty", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant", "Duel in the Sun"), and highlights from his terrific Hitchcock scores ("Strangers on a Train", "Dial 'M' for Murder"), the collection offers a variety of lesser-known titles, like "Night Passage" and "Tension at Table Rock", the eerie "The Thing from Another World", and my beloved "Tarzan" film (which still ranks as one of my favorite scores!). You even get to hear his unused theme music for television's "The Wild, Wild West" (the producers decided against his symphonic sound, opting for a jingle by Richard Markowitz, instead).
My only quibbles are minor ones; I wish there had been a way to use Tex Ritter's vocal tracks for "High Noon", and Frankie Laine's, for "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" and "Rawhide". The vocalists in the collection have good voices, but nobody could 'deliver' these tunes like the original singers! Also, there are no selections from Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon", another unforgettable score...but with so many other films represented, I can't complain TOO much!
From the sweep of "The Alamo" and "Red River", to the bouncy "War Wagon", to the epic sound of "The Guns of Navarone" (which Steven Spielberg has called one of the greatest adventure film scores, ever), this is a total joy that I plan to listen to, again and again...
If I could give out SIX stars, I would!
Description of The Alamo: The Essential Film Music Collection
Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more.
