This is something that is really hard to describe. Word come cheap when it comes to describing this, so i'll try hard to do it justice. First off, this is great. Just great. Mike Patton is really a true match for these guys. It kinda bums me out that Mike Patton didn't up and join TDEP after this EP, but Greg Puciato does a good job of filling his shoes. But once you've tasted the music on this CD, you can't help but want more.

First off, pretty much every Mike Patton has musically touched has turned to something greater than gold. And he only gets better at it, and this one of his more recent projects. This CD is just ohenomenal on every level-every song takes unexpected and exciting turns at great times. This CD is extremely heavy, has lots of palm muting and double bass, but nobody has ever made music like this. The unexpected song twists and turns are genuine unlike system of a down, and hearing something this genuine and extreme is great. Mike Patton's voice will not only make the hairs on your arm and back raise, the might even bore holes through whatever you happen to be wearing upon time of listening to this. His lyrics on this are many things- inventive, geinous, funny, imaginitive, vague but above all else, theyre great. His vocal delivery is unlike anything i've ever heard, even by his more recent standards. He has such an unbridled intensity and control, Phil Anselmo would defidently tip his hat to Mike if he ever heard this.

Now for the DEP members performances. The guitar playing is great. This is the best two guitar CD since Korn did Follow The Leader. By two guitar, i mean that both guitarists are playing things the other one isnt playing for most of the time. It is not only fantastic that they are doing something like this, but how they do it and what they come up with is great. After hearing this CD (and Follow the Leader) you really learn to see the printiple of "twin guitar",where both guitar players play the same thing but take turns doing solos as nothing more than cheesy unless it is Metallica at the wheel. The stuff they whip out is insane. Some of the riffs have lead guitar-tinges, but this CD is devoid of traditional soloing. The bass is HUGE. Huge, chunked out and occasicanally distorted bass cuts and chunks through every song. This is a great bass CD. The drumming is amazing. Their drummer pulls the beat in all directions, and displays a true talent you don't see in many drummers today. The use of sampling and keyboards are amazing. They add little subtle touches here and there, but they make all the difference.

Both the combined efforts of Mike Patton and the Dillinger Escape Plan create something truly unique.

Holywood Squares shows weird time signatures, but not at the opportunity cost of great riffs and melodies, and is a great introduction to this little EP that as far as the greatness of content, is worth a regular CD's price. Once this song picks up past the weird intro of weird time signatures, hold onto something tight because you are on quite a trip from here on out.

Pig Latin starts with a nice, cool little spanish tinged guitar part, and then morphs into something heavier. It takes super huge, chunked out bass with weird breaks in the music and a slightly more punk oriented style of guitar playing, and takes a lot more unexpected turn.

To be fair, the first two minutes of this song are noise. The band and Mike Patton bang through weird time signatures through a bunch of riffs that avoid the low strings. If you can bear it past this initial two minutes, then pat yourself on the back for sticking around because the rest of the song is amazing. The clamour drops out as the band plays erie keyboard and guitar parts, with the drumming sounding like it is in some other room, as Mike Patton sings extremely erie melodies. This part, rich in atmosphere fades away. Then a great guitar part comes in with strings, as Patton sings a more menacing vocal melody with his great lyrics, and then this song explodes with the best heavy riffs on the CD. The song alternates between these two and ends with a thankfully very short repeat of the parts in the first two minutes of the song.

The cover of Aphex Tiwn's "Come To Daddy" isn't as much a cover as it is a reinvisioning of the song. They take the instrumental melodies and play them through TDEP's own sonic palette. In the bridge, the guitar players are playing very neat, new parts to add to this cover. The intro to this song doesn't sound as heavy on headphones, but sounds E X T R E M E L Y heavy playing it in your car.

this CD is amazing. It is an EP, but these three songs along with the cover are worth the price of a full length. Get it now to hear something truly unique and explosive. And explosive in the right way.
