Music reviews of Expansion Team

Music Review: Very Good but the other 2 albums are better
Rating: 4 Stars

Dilated Peoples are my favorite crew, to me they represent hip-hop in its purest form which is just strong beats backed up with good lyrics.

They don't claim to be the greatest lyricists in the world, their just doing their thing.

Expansion Team is the second release from the group since their hugely dope debut The Platform.

The album gets to a good start with 'Live On Stage' as Rakaa and Evidence get busy with their improved lyrics and Babu gets busy with his scratching. If you seen them live then you would know why they have a track called 'Live on Stage'

Then we have the single 'Worst comes to Worst' which uses samples from William Bell's 'I forgot to be your lover' and has no doubt become a classic joint for the Peoples to be remembered in Hip-Hop.

DJ Premier gives them a hot track with 'Clockwork' with the usual Ev & Rakaa bragging rhymes.

They then bust a little concept with Da Beatminerz produced 'Trade Money' where they talk about loving money but not letting it control them.

However there is some medicore stuff on the album with 'Heavy Rotation' feat the liks which didn't capture the spark they had with 'Right On' on The Platform. Also 'War' should have just been an accapella just like he performs it live or they should of recorded him doing it live. ?uestloves drums didn't sound very good with the rhymes.

'Hard Hitters' was average because all the stuff they said on that track were said through out the album and had lost its edge.

I truly believe that it was Rakaa who had stepped up his lyrical game and flow the most on this album, whereas Evidence had lost the flow he had for the first album and was unable to keep up with Iriscience.

Babu really shows his Production talents on this album with 2 amazing tracks in 'Proper Properganda' & 'Pay Attention' (My Favorite Dilated Track Ever) as well as him getting busy with his crew The Beat Junkies on 'Dilated Junkies'

However as an album it doesn't make an impression like the new album 'Neighborhood Watch' and debut 'The Platform' does.
Expansion Team is basically the Platform but the cuts don't leave a big enough impression.

Neighborhood Watch has much better song writing and it is much easier to take in because their's no filler on the album with the exception of 'This Way'.

Dilated Fans should pick up the album but realise after 'Pay Attention' the album does drag on.

Description of Expansion Team

Japanese version featuring a bonus track
Having threatened on their debut, The Platform, to bring the sound of the underground to the masses, Dilated Peoples hones their old-school hooks and breaks on Expansion Team to ensnare purists and the mainstream alike. Over downtempo beats, eerie Hitchcock strings ("Clock Work"), dinner jazz ("Pay Attention!"), '70s cop-show horns ("Hard Hitters"), and DJ Babu's turntable gymnastics ("Dilated Junkies"), their exhausting couplets wage war on the talents of fellow hip-hop crews while simultaneously validating their boasts of rhyme supremacy. Yet it's the instantly addictive slow roller "Worst Come to Worst" that best proves their point. Along with the "nobody comes close" taunts, there's a lot of regulation second-album material: "Trade Money" assures that success isn't without its downsides ("Since last year I've accumulated more money / On top of that I got a lot of people acting funny"), "Proper Propaganda" has a pop at the media, and there are countless reassurances that success doesn't mean principles will be compromised. Their messages may not be new, but the Dilated Peoples' genius is delivering them with simmering tunes that make them worth hearing again. --Dan Gennoe
