The only known surviving organ played by Dietrich Buxtehude can be heard here in two authoritative performances of the Danish master's Toccata in D minor and Praeludium in E minor. Much of the Hauptwerk of the Buxtehude organ in Torrloesa, Sweden was in the Marienkirche in Helsingborg, where it resided from 1580 (in its original incarnation as a single manual instrument with no pedal organ) to 1641 (when it was provided with a rueckpositif, pedal organ, and a front which still bears an inscription by Buxtehude's father, Johann). Dietrich Buxtehude played this instrument from 1657 to 1660, before then moving on to Elsinore. In 1849, the hauptwerk and pedals were transferred to the church at Torrloesa, Sweden, where eventually (1961-2) a new rueckpositif was added with the same specifications as that of the Marienkirche. This recording also features fine performances by organist Hans Helmut Tillmanns of works by Sibelius and Grieg on two other noteworthy Christensen organs, one at the Ostre Porsgrunn Kirke, Norway and the other at Sondre Sogns Kirke in Viborg, Denmark. Particularly outstanding are the Partita in C minor by Rolf Karlsen (1911-1981), director of music at Oslo cathedral, and the magisterial Passacaglia on the Lutheran chorale "I will praise and give thanks" by David Wikander (1884-1955), organist at Stockholm cathedral.
