Music Review: James and Haymes expertly recorded on Columbia

I took a chance on this release because some of the Collector's Choice reissues turned out to be taken from poorly recorded sources. Not this one! It is just beautifully done. The brass is crisp, the sound is crystal clear, and the vocals are flawless. I'm really impressed with the near high fidelity sound of these compact discs. Sometime during the late 1930's Columbia started to use a 33 1/3 rpm safety disc set up along with their usual 78 rpm recording apparatus. I believe that this reissue came from the safeties. In any case, it is one enjoyable CD set. Now I have to comment on both Harry James' trumpet playing and Dick Haymes' singing.
I've been a fan of good music and a record collector for more than fifty years, and I'm beginning to think that Harry James led the best band of the Great Band Era (1936-1945). His trumpet playing is impeccable. Some say it is too florid, but I disagree. He played what the public wanted, but he did it with style and grace. I paticularly like his 'Flight Of the Bumblebee', 'Carnival Of Venice', 'Caprice Viennois', and 'Ultra'. James played classical music as well as jazz and popular big band. Now, Dick Haymes followed Frank Sinatra as James' vocalist. I didn't pay much attention to him until I started to really get involved with Harry James' music. Dick Haymes really had a great voice and knew how to deliver a song! All of his vocals on this CD set are good. I particularly like 'Delores', 'Lament To Love', 'You've Changed', 'Idaho', and 'The Devil Sat Down and Cried' (with Helen Forrest).
I was born in 1946, so I'm a Boomer. My folks loved music of the 1930s and 1940s. I got my love of music from them! So, if you like the big bands, get this CD set, and investigate Harry James. He comes highly recommended!
