Music Review: swing along with Diana Dors' obscure 1960 jazz platter

What a thrill it is to find Diana Dors' only full-length album, the imaginatively titled SWINGIN' DORS, on CD for the very first time. Budget UK label Castle has gone above and beyond with their job of reproducing the original 1960 album, right down to the cover's cardboard "doors" which open to reveal a lovely B&W portrait of Diana.
Mainly regarded as England's answer to Marilyn Monroe, the blonde and shapely Diana Dors was far from a flash in the pan, although her acting career sadly never really moved passed one-note romantic comedy roles (one startling exception was her performance as murderess Mary Price Hilton in 1956's "Yield to the Night"). Instead, audiences were just happy to lap her up in sunny musicals like "An Alligator Named Daisy".
Dors' career as a recording artist really--quite disappointingly--began and concluded with SWINGIN' DORS. In a collection of mostly upbeat popular favourites arranged and conducted by Wally Stott, Dors reveals a charming, solid singing voice, certainly on a par with most of the female singers from the period (her timbre and overall phrasing is quite similar to Doris Day). Even if you aren't at all familiar with Dors, you'll be instantly charmed by this album and eager to discover more of Dors' material. A rare treat for old fans and new! Recommended.
