Music reviews of Blue Skies

Music Review: Simply Wonderful
Rating: 5 Stars

I was fan of Diana on American Idol because I thought her voice was superior to the other contestants, and also because she presented herself as more mature than her 17 years might suggest. However, when I knew she was going to make an album, I had my concerns, as I was afraid it would be a cheesy, teenybopper album, in the same league as something Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan would produce.

I have never been more happy to be proven wrong. Yes, this is still an album geared more for teens, but what do you expect? She is a teen herself. However, her voice is so mature that adults will enjoy it if they have an appreciation for real voices in a world that produces artists that don't know the difference between a sharp or a flat.

Granted, Diana was not given the best material - some of the songs have turned out to be a little cheesy ("Then I Woke Up" - I'm a hip-hop queen/a rock and roll dream... I'm a little Lynerd Skynerd/a little 50 cent). However, Diana, as is the case with her single "Dreams", takes the below-par material and makes it her own. Her mature voices makes up for the immature lines that sprinkle some of the songs. She is far beyond her other teen competitors.

Here are my thoughts on each individual song

Cardboard Castles - Wonderful song, has the best lyrics on the album in my opinion, a song that shows Diana's superior voice but that fans can sing along to, good rhythm, has potential to do very well on the radio. It portrays both a man and a girl who are chasing their vain dreams and "building cardboard castles in the air". Excellent meaning behind this song and Diana portrays that well.

Blue Skies - Very pretty song, makes Diana's voice sound like it's really floating on clouds, slower than the other songs on her album but something that everybody should enjoy. She puts a good amount of emotion in it and is a wonderful "thank you" to all of her many fans.

Emotional - Good song, not the best arrangement for Diana's voice but she still takes it like a pro and shows us why she was the runner-up on AI, amazing vocals on this song, geared to attract teen girls but moms would enjoy listening with them.

Then I Woke Up - like I said, cheesy lyrics in some places, but still, a very upbeat and fun song that would get anybody tapping their feet. The music is so catchy that you overlook the weaknesses in the lyrics, though it's not the best song to show off Diana's vocals. Still, something that people would enjoy dancing to in their car.

All I Never Wanted - This song sounds like something Hilary Duff would sing because the music is straight-up pop, but the lyrics are good and portray a girl lamenting over a broken relationship (don't know why I feel so shattered/I should have known better/you were all I never wanted)

Go On and Cry - this is a gem in the CD and one of my particular favorites. Some people discard this because it is not a song that would do well on the radio as it is very slow and mournful, but this shows off Diana's voice like no other, and it is a song that both adults and teens will enjoy. More excellent lyrics are on this song, in which Diana tells her former partner that she has cried over him and it's his turn (you left me so sad/you hurt me so bad/it's your turn to cry cry cry). Diana puts the perfect amount of emotion in this, and the very soft, tender beginning makes you want to pay more attention to what's coming up. Excellent through and through.

The Difference In Me - Another very catchy song like "Then I Woke Up", but this one has much better lyrics. It accuses a boy for not noticing and/or respecting the changes she has made for him. Not the best song for Diana's voice but she still does well with it.

Till You Want Me - A very Leann Rimes type of song, and that's a good thing. This song fits Diana very well, good beat, good lyrics. Overall good, though not outstanding in my eyes.

Dreams - This was her original single and was the 3rd highest selling single this year. This proves why. Wonderful song to show off Diana's voice, and the lyrics are very uplifting and inspirational. A tribute to her American Idol journey, no doubt.

Boy Like You - This is my particular favorite. Another extremely upbeat, catchy song that would catch a passerby's attention. In this song Diana complains that she has stood by her best guy friend for years, listened to him, understood him, and yet he is in love with another girl. She says that "this is for every girl alive fallin for a boy like you... this is for every girl alive whose heart's been broken by a boy like you". Obviously a teen-oriented song, but the lyrics have good meaning behind them and it's something that many teens (and even reminiscing adults) can relate to.

Dream, Dream, Dream - A fairly good song with a funky beat, lyrics that celebrate the way a certain guy makes Diana feel (oh you've got my head in the clouds... oh you've got me dancing in the rain), and shows off her higher range. Not my favorite song on the album but still good.

Don't Cry Out Loud - Lyrically this is an excellent song, speaking of a young girl who followed the man of her dreams and got her heart broken but is still trying to be strong. And vocally it is a very good, but one can't help but remember how much better it was on the Top 3 night of American Idol. Still, Diana's voice in superior. Another slow song that adults will fall in love with, and a good song to end the album.

All in all, a wonderful debut album. Perhaps not something that will go triple platinum in the first week, but it is something that I can see staying high on the charts for awhile. It's a CD that a teen would buy, but their parents would find themselves listening and singing along to. Good job, Diana - I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.
