this album begins with a man's voice telling you how "the boys are here recording their music..." and if i remember correctly... i read an interview with the Dharma Bums a long long time ago, where they explained that they recorded this album in a high school, and that voice was the voice of the janitor on the night shift. pretty cool. i'm not really aware of anything else about this band, but this is a pretty good example of that sort of earnest early 90's chunky alternative rock that seemed to be influenced from the sounds of Husker Du or maybe early Replacements. and although, Dharma Bums isn't quite as noisy as either of those two bands, they seem to fit into the same ballpark to me for some reason. unfortunately, Dharma Bums weren' quite as charasmatic as those two bands either, but they managed to make a solid album that i'll pull out once in awhile. Bliss is bookmarked by it's best songs, the rousing "Pumpkinhead" (which contains that janitor intro) and the slow paced closer "A Place To Be." the remainder of the album doesn't hold my attention too well....but i don't skip the songs when they show up in random mode on the iPod. i would recommend this to fans of "The Horse They Rode In On" -era Soul Asylum and other bands of that old Minneapolis sound.
