Content includes the 12 tracks from original album plus 6 live bonus tracks, all on one disc. With Freedom of Choice, Devo completed their transition into a full-fledged synth-pop group, producing a musically cohesive album spawning hits like the breakthrough hit 'Whip It,' 'Girl U Want,' and 'Gates Of Steel.' Synthesizers were fully integrated into the band's sound, frequently dominating the arrangements sharing equal time with the guitars. Everything is played with a cool, polished precision that mirrors the stylized uniformity of the band's visuals; the dissonance is more subdued than in the past, and the rhythms lock the band into a rigidly even keel.While it was never determined whether those plastic things on their heads were flowerpots or collapsible drinking cups, the high-concept-minded Akron, Ohio, crew known as Devo had attracted mostly just the artsy new-wave crowd until this 1980 album brought them mass appeal. Way ahead of the video curve (they'd been making promo films since 1975), this band led by singer Mark Mothersbaugh and bassist Jerry Casale scored a huge hit with the jagged-rhythmed "Whip It," thanks in large part to a typically tongue-in-cheek video that MTV and dance clubs jumped on.
