Music Review: A Performance Tailor-Made for Dennis DeYoung
Rating: 5 Stars

One reason why the band Styx became one of the most popular rock bands in the world was because of their ability to fuse a theatrical sound with elements of classic rock. Thus much of the attention of Styx focused around two dynamic forces in the band - Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw. While Styx had always had a history of tensions in the band, it was clear in the 1980s that DeYoung and Shaw were having artistic differences. Shaw favored a harder rock sound while DeYoung favored much more of a hard rock sound. So some two decades later, when DeYoung had left the band, he was afforded the opportunity to do something that fit very well into the mold of Styx as well as himself - play with a symphony orchestra. The idea of playing with a symphony orchestra seems almost tailor-made for De Young's theatrical and progressive style. This is what attracted me to see DeYoung perform at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra in November 2006. That particular performance had blown me away and had me wanting more. Fortunately, DeYoung had already released a live CD from a 2003 performance in Chicago. That two CD set entitled "Dennis DeYoung - The Music of Styx Live with Symphony Orchestra" captured a lot of the magic you get from a DeYoung performance. It proved my theory that DeYoung's style was tailor-made for a symphony orchestra.

With this collection, there are three components that make this a very good collection:

1-The outstanding work done by orchestra under the direction of Arnie Roth. Roth is a longtime conductor for these series of symphony orchestra concerts that DeYoung did. From seeing him live and hearing the orchestra on this CD, you can hear that not only does he get the most out of the orchestra, but he also "gets" the music of DeYoung and Styx.

2-DeYoung assembles his own band and musicians to complement the vocalists. His longtime guitarist Tommy Dziallo and longtime bassist Hank Horton do an outstanding job. It is also worth noting that DeYoung's wife Suzanne provides background vocals. DeYoung also brings two guest vocalists in - Michael Eldred and Dawn Marie Feusi to perform guest vocals on his songs he wrote for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". These songs are: "Ave Maria" (featuring Eldred) and "With Every Heartbeat" (featuring Eldred and Feusi).

3-DeYoung proves he still is one powerful vocalist - even in his late 50s. The health problems that plagued DeYoung in the 90s haven't caused him to lose a step. What I discovered is that when I saw DeYoung in concert, he does a great job at interacting with the audience. The nice thing about this collection you get a good feel for this interaction.

In addition, there are three original songs on this collection. These are studio tracks - "Hello God", "My God (Can Beat Up Your God)", and "Goodnight My Love". These are very good tracks. The first two tracks listed show DeYoung going into a Christian Rock/Pop direction. My only complaint about these tracks is that they are on this particular album which is primarily a live performance. There is no mention in the liner notes that these are original studio tracks. It is only after listening to the music does one discover this. "Hello God" appears at the end of the first disc while "My God" and "Goodnight My Love" appear at the end of the second list.

Working with the Symphony Orchestra affords DeYoung the opportunity to dabble in some classical music. The classic Styx song "Lorelei" is preceded by Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik". The Mozart introduction provides the perfect segue into "Lorelei" - which also benefits from having the orchestra. The other classical piece performed is Debussy's Claire De Lune. As mentioned above there are two show-tunes. While I can't say I'm a big fan of the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" soundtrack, I do like the songs that are included on this collection and they integrate nicely into DeYoung's "theatrical" type of setting he looks to create with the Symphony Orchestra.

Also mentioned above is the strength of DeYoung's vocals. DeYoung performs the classic Styx song "Show Me the Way" (which also has a Christian influence). The amazing thing is that DeYoung performs this a cappella - without the band and without the orchestra. He pulls this off flawlessly and in a nice way this also adds to the whole "theatrical" experience that this particular performance brings.

Most importantly nothing is lost with DeYoung's Styx songs or solo songs. From listening to the songs, you are going to be hungrier for more. Songs such as "Grand Illusion", "Lorelei", "Light Up", "Castle Walls", "Mr. Roboto", "Black Wall", and "Rockin' the Paradise" are the standout songs. In fact, there are no weak songs on this collection. However it is the two songs that "wrap-up" the performance - "The Best of Times" and "Come Sail Away" that really blow you away. Hearing these songs performed with the Symphony Orchestra was about as good as it gets. For the entire performance, it's hard to tell if the songs are ordered in that they were performed, but it's a similar flow to what I heard in Philadelphia.

The one disappointment with this collection is the lack of liner notes. There is very little in the way of liner notes. I would have liked to have read some background information for how DeYoung came up with the concept for this performance. I would have also had liked to see the lyrics for the new songs. As mentioned above, there was no notation whatsoever that these were original songs. Overall, this is a very good collection. Styx fans should be very happy with the way DeYoung keeps the "theatrical element" going - although they may be slightly disappointed with the loss of some of the hard rocking edge. This collection should also appeal to the new fan as well. Highly recommended.
