Music Review: Heavy, Melodic, Intense, What more could you want?

Demon Hunter started with their self titled CD which was unique, aggressive, and over all just a great album. It seemed hard to match but it turns out
Summer Of Darkness is at least as good if not slightly better. It starts out with the fast paced song "Not Ready to Die" which fans will notice it sounds a lot different than their previous work but it sounds more matured and fans will like the new sound. The vocals sound a little cleaner and a little more accessible. Following is possibly the best song on the CD. "The Awakening" plays a whole different mood than "Not Ready to Die". It starts out with the Melodic chorus. Which actually proves to be an excellent opener. This song is slower and more unique than "Not Ready to Die" but it turns out better. As there is the perfect blend of singing and screaming. This is one of the best mix I have heard in metal. I dare anyone not to at least like this song. Next is "Beheaded" which is probably the heaviest song on the album. It has the guest vocals of Mike Williams of The Agony Scene. Which add almost a death metal tone to the chorus. The song is for people who really want to headbang!
"My Heartstrings Come Undone" is the slowest song on the album. It still has some heavy guitars here and there but the tone of the song is more nu metalish. I don't love this song but for those who want a melodic slower song that still has some heaviness in it this will be your song. "Our Faces Fall Apart" is the next song. This is another one of the best songs on the CD. The bridge is one of the best Demon Hunter moments ever. It starts out with a short intro leading up to Ryan's intense, powerful vocals. The best part is yet to come. The bridge, the bridge features Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage. The bridge has the pounding vocals of Howard and Ryan paired with excellent guitars. Yet another part that I dare anyone not to at least like. I could loop the bridge all day! "Less Than Nothing" is the following song. Its slower than some of the previous songs but it still can be considered heavy. Its one of the less interesting songs on the CD and there isn't much to say about it.
"Summer of Darkness" is the next song. It features a medium length intro that gives you chills. After that it goes right into a brutal, blaring riff that is one of the best riffs on the CD. Of course it also has Ryan's intense vocals that give it a lot of life. The chorus is also quite good and is catchy. "Beauty Through the Eyes of a Predator" follows with some of the best vocals on the album. The starting vocals show just how unique Ryan can rapidly pair words together.Then the chorus features Brock Lindow of 36 Crazyfists which compared to the first two guest vocals is subtly added into the song. Its in the background of the chorus and really adds depth. "Annihilate the Corrupt" sounds similar to "Summer of Darkness" but its more accessible. The riff like "Summer of Darkness" is heavy and one of the best riffs on the album. Other than the riff the song fairly generic. Its still good it just needs to be more unique. "I Play Dead" sound a lot like "The Awakening" combining a perfect blend of singing and screaming. You'll either like it more or not as much. I don't like it quite as much but its still a good song that shows that Demon Hunter can throw out some superb singing.
"Everything Was White" is the most thrash influenced song on the album. It has a very fast riff and intense, raging vocals that once again show that Ryan can produce amazing vocals at an astonishing rate. The chorus is forgettable but its one of the best songs for people who just want some music to headbang to.
"Coffin Builder" is one of the worst songs on the album. It features Trevor McNevan of Thousand Foot Krutch but even Trevor's appearance is a little weak. The song just lacks variety and anything really interesting. However its still a good song. Just needs something ear catching to make it superb. Finally we have
"The Latest and the Last" it has one of the better riffs on the album. Its heavy and is a good closer for the album. Nothing very notable about the vocals, however their still pretty good and the guitars make up for it.
Overall this album is amazing! This is one of the few albums of any genre that I actually haven't deleted any of the songs. Some are slightly weak in places but overall all the songs offer a solid sound. I would recommend this album to anyone. Out of all the Demon Hunter albums this is definitely my favorite.
