Music reviews of Deicide

Music Review: Hilarious blasphemy from Florida's favorite Hick Heshers!
Rating: 5 Stars

Deicide is a much maligned band because of the antics of Glenn Benton. However, their acts seem tame when compared to the more grotesque actions of the Norwegian Black Metal bands (at least back in the mid-nineties). There's no question these guys have burnt out alot of their brain cells from drinking and dope, which makes them funny to watch on video (or with their bikes and guns) but this isn't about the guys personally (just a bunch of atheist hicks having some blasphemous fun), this is about their music.

Deicide's self titled release contains some of the darkest, most brutal music that 1990 could produce. Slayer is a great comparison, but toss them in a blender with Possessed and a great death metal band such as Deicide comes out.

With a rudimentary and often "comic book" knowledge of the occult, the floridians created a maelstorm of malevolence that retains its brilliance to this day. The blasting riffs of Lunatic of God's Creation come blaring in the beginning (after an obligatory intro) and the album never lets up from there.

Sacrificial Suicide features a catchier riff, and a great prechorus. One of the best songs on here though, is "Dead By Dawn". Dead By Dawn is based upon the Necronomicon and the Evil Dead series. It features the catchiest chorus on here which would set the precedent for Deicide albums to come: "Dead by Dawn, Dead by Dawn, Dead By Dawn DEAAAD- bY Dawwwn!!"

The album peaks there but there is still some good songs left like Crucifixation and Carnage in the Temple of the Dammned (based upon the Jonestown Massacre).

Deicide may not be the most technical or "intelligent" of death metal bands, but they construct riffs that are both creative and catchy (at least for their time). They're not as bludgeoning as Morbid Angel, but they have a simpler "Slayer on Mach 10" element that is missing from many modern death metal bands.

Another element that makes the debut so unique is Glenn Benton. Love him or hate him, he has an indistiguishable vocal style, that is made all the better by his (over) usage of a vocal harmonizer on this album (ironically, this would be the last album he would use such an effect). The effect makes the songs even more "evil" if cheesy at times.

He has a rhythmic style that almost reeks of a "Groove" something fellow maligned Death Metallers Cannibal Corpse could not (at least back then) attest to). An early "Death Metal" Rob Zombie?? Speaking of them, as fellow "best sellers" in the death metal genre, Deicide pulverizes them in the dirt (pun unintended, and at least for their early material). Early CC would never have thought of riffs this vicious and obscene.

Steve Asheim is an underrated drummer in the best tradition of Pete Sandoval or Dave Lombardo. His tasty drum riffing on Carnage in paticular (and occasional 3/4 timing in that song) is inspiring. His blasts are great as well, up there with the other viledom of satanic death metal.

On the subject of humor: Well Deicide is unintentionally hilarious whether it be the whole concept of "sacrifical suicide" or the "you must give praise..to satan" of Crucifixation. What can be considered a liability is overall most likely youthful naivete. To me, it just ads to the fun, Deicide were way more serious with lyrics on later albums.

To conclude, many will say that Deicide is one of the worst death metal bands. Compared to the faceless masses of early nineties bands though, they are (were) one of the best. One of my favorite debut albums of ALL time..Judge it for yourself: BUY THIS ALBUM FOR SATAaaannN!!
