Music reviews of Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits

Music Review: Def Leppard's Vault Is Opened
Rating: 3 Stars

[BEFORE I START THIS REVIEW, THIS CD IS THE ONE THAT INTRODUCED ME TO DEF LEPPARD. I AM A HUGE DEF LEPPARD FAN AND WHILE THIS CD IS A DECENT INTRODUCTION, I FEEL IT DOESN'T DO THE BAND JUSTICE. KEEP THIS IN MIND.]

Now that aside, I just want to say "wow". I don't think I could have been introduced to D.L. any other way than with Vault. While "Vault" is highly controversial by many fans as being the "overloaded hysteria song" album, I have come to the conclusion that you shouldn't judge this cd by that one statement alone. Not one, but yes six songs from the hysteria album on this cd is inexcusable to me. This left absolutely no room for any songs from "On Through The Night". While their debut album doesn't really sound like any of their later music I still feel that it should have been represented by at least one or two songs on Vault. D.L. does not compile their best songs from each of their previous albums on Vault.

To me, a greatest hits album should compile the best of all their previous albums. I'm not just talking about D.L. here either; I'm talking about any band that wants to make a greatest hits album. That is one of the reasons why I rated Vault with three stars. The 2nd reason I rated Vault with three stars is because some of the songs on Vault were shortened. It is good because it allows them to make room for more songs. It is bad because when songs are shortened i.e. Rocket, they lose the "meat."

Finally my 3rd reason for rating Vault with 3 stars, can simply be put in three words: too many ballads. I'm not saying ballads are a terrible thing, but that's overkill.. Again, this comes back to the hysteria overload topic I mentioned earlier. Another point I want to make about greatest hits cds, they should be well rounded. By that, I mean that the greatest hits cd should have songs that equally represent the band.

Ok now I will break down each song and justify my reason why I think it should be on the cd or not be.

1. Pour Some Sugar On Me - This song definitely earned its spot on Vault. I have no problem with it.

2. Photograph - Again, definitely earned its spot. No problem here.

3. Love Bites - One of many ballads on Vault, D.L. should have placed them all on a second cd along with Vault. But as far as the song itself, brilliant lyrics, really hits the heart.

4. Let's Get Rocked - This song is starting to hint toward their "pop" attitude but doesn't quite make it there. Definitely has a unique approach.

5. Two Steps Behind (acoustic version) - Ok I have a major problem with this one. Since there are two versions of this song (other being electric) they should have obviously placed both on the album. For example, place the acoustic version with the other ballads, and the electric with the other rockers.

6. Animal - I have some mixed feelings about this song. It doesn't really fit well when you place it along with the rest of the songs. It's right up there with the caliber of "Let's Get Rocked."

7. Foolin - Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this ballad is one of the ones that started it all for D.L.'s many ballads to come. I think it fits well with the other ballads on Vault.

8. Rocket - This song got really butchered in Vault. It lost nearly two minutes of instrumental. What was D.L. thinking?

9. When Love and Hate Collide - Ok I like this song a lot. I don't understand why a lot of people say this is just another mediocre ballad. It's one of their newer ballads so this could be why. This song definitely hits home for lots and that's why it is one of my favorites.

10. Armageddon It - This song is just plain hilarious. Listen to it a few times and watch the music video and you will see what I mean.

11. Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad? - Girls really love this song and D.L. doesn't know why. Well it's obvious guys! It is a very sentimental song with emotional lyrics that's bound to break anyone into tears. This song really hits home for me.

12. Rock of Ages - Definitely a ROCK N ROLL song if I ever heard one. KISS and TWISTED SISTER are proud.

13. Hysteria - This song I have mixed feelings about. It doesn't really fit well with the ballads. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome song but it just feels out of place on Vault, like Animal.

14. Miss You In A Heartbeat - D.L. did a smart move placing this song right next to Bringin On The Heartbreak. While it is the softer song of the two, I think it is the more overlooked song of the two.

15. Bringing On The Heartbreak - I have recently begun liking this song after I bought High N Dry. When I first heard it on Vault, I really pushed it aside and really just concentrated on the first half of the cd. Now I know what I have been missing by skipping this song. Everybody DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE YOU'LL BE KICKING YOURSELF!

To conclude, Vault is a great album to start out your collection with if you are a first time listener of D.L. It may not give you the opportunity to listen to a well-rounded collection of their music but it will definitely get you started nonetheless. If you start your collection with Vault I HIGHLY recommend you check out their other albums. In any event use Vault for starters but once you get your collection going, put it aside and enjoy the long ride on through the night.

Description of Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits

Japanese pressing includes an exclusive bonus track. Mercury. 2006.
To have resisted Def Leppard's radio power in their heyday, you'd have to have been a critic--and even some of us could hardly argue with the likes of "Photograph," "Animal," and "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." Vault covers a decade and a half of hits by the one-time wonder boys of the new wave of British metal, but perhaps inevitably concentrates on singles from the multiplatinum Pyromania and Hysteria. It offers little meaning beyond fun fun fun, but there are hooks here that Noel Gallagher would punch a paparazzo for. --Rickey Wright
