Music Review: The end of one of Thrash Metal's most interesting bands

D.A. had been evolving since their first album so a listener who knew their previous work would still not know what to expect when picking up this album.
The album opens up with the awesome "Seemingly Endless Time". The song starts off as a cacophony of sounds only to lead to one of the coolest riffs in D.A.'s career. The second song "Stop" continues in this vein of Thrash with a twist.
Two songs down and it would seem that we have an awesom album on our hands. Then with the third song we have the acoustics. The song isn't that bad but it doesn't lead anywhere. Having that unexpected interlude we are led into the fourth song that returns back to what the first two songs were doing. "The Organization" is probably one of the best songs of D.A.'s career. (When I saw them at a show once everyone went crazy when they played this song.)
The fifth song goes somewhere else. The funk drumming starts the song off with an ominous guitar chord. Then you have the slap bass...and then the rocking starts. Not a bad song but it is something that will definitely catch the listener off guard.
The sixth song goes back to the acoustic stuff -for the entire song. "Stagnant" is a cheesy song. "Ex-TC" (hmm, wonder what that's about?) continues in this major radio rock theme. The last two songs are okay; they're heavy enough, and they have a steady beat to them.
This album is huge departure from their first two albums. No two D.A. albums sound alike but this whole record is only a mirror image of the band. I wonder if being on Geffen records had anything to do with this. This album probably alienated many of their former fans.
In the end what the album lacks is consistency. The music is all over the place. It's highly experimental but in the end this kills its appeal to Thrashers because they sacrafice heavyness and speed to acheive the experimental end. I'll give it 3 1/2 stars for attempting to expand the musical possibilities of Thrash.
