Music Review: Deana Gets It

There are a lot of famous singers, I won't mention names, who are trying to prove to the world that they could sing standards. They believe that they could have still made it big if they had been around in the 30s & 40s and had to compete with Crosby, Sinatra, Como, and Martin. (Dean or Tony, take your pick) And they're all wet. They could never have made it in that realm, not for lack of talent, but because they just don't get what that style of music is all about. Deana Martin gets it, and proves she gets it with VOLARE. It's not just notes and lyrics, it's feelings and emotions. It's a varied selection of songs, shaded in different styles, but all with their roots in romance. Her rendition of "Return To Me" is not just sung, it's performed. The urgency in her voice tells the whole back-story and makes the song a short play. And most importantly, it's not acted, it's sincere. She Gets It. Deana Martin is one of today's very few singers who probably would have been a star during music's golden age, and she's certainly a star today. VOLARE is a gem.
